All I can remember is a photo in The Railway Magazine ... (Hope it wasn't April 1st!)

Have a feeling it was 40063. 5690 still had the CME headboard on it when it came to the rescue.

I think it was later than that I'd say about 97/98 and 48151 was scrambled from Carnforth with a Steam lance fitted to its front bufferbeam. I think it was Salt that was shorting out track circuits. All this came at a time when Railtrack was having trouble gauging charters at the time and quite a few journos asked 'why is it you need 13 weeks notice for LE movement yet when you needed 48151 to clear the WCML you had it cleared in less than 2 hours?!'

I believe that when the Scarborough Spas were running on the Harrogate loop, it was regularly used as a connection from Leeds to Harrogate for passengers ex a TPE service from Manchester airport. The normal connection was a Pacer some time later........

A couple of pictures of the 5690 incident on 21st August 1980, wrong line working at Ais Gill and the failed 40179 being dragged into Garsdale before being reversed into the sidings. 22744.jpg 22746.jpg

I seem to remember in the early '60s boarding a train at KX bound for Newcastle only for the diesel to fail on the journey and a 'proper' engine being added as pilot. Can't remember if it was an A4 or another Pacific.

It counts alright. Deltic had come to a stand at Sutton Cross and could not proceed so off went Thunderbird 34081. :Resistanceisfutile:

I've been looking through an album of industrial steam locos.
At Francis colliery in Ayrshire it was customary for their 0-4-0ST to bank loaded trains up the gradient out of the colliery complex. A photo taken in February 1978 shows "a class 20 hauled train receiving a welcome push".
Did the steam loco continue (unofficially of course) on to BR metals I wonder?

I know No 7 at Bickershaw Colliery was so used at least once in the 1980s.

It was a regular occurrence, as well as bailing out the 08 that was trialled as a potential steam replacement and found to be inadequate. The diesels that eventually arrived had double the HP of the 08!
