As mentioned in another thread, I went to the Harz last week for a couple of days. Due to the flight times, I had two full days photting out there, and in total it only cost me £200. Not bad for booking everything 5 days in advance! Would've been nice to have had some better weather, especially as the following two days were glorious on the Brocken! Oh well. Managed one shot in sun, so not all bad.

Hi, excellent photos, I really fancy paying a visit, could you tell me where did you fly to and how you then got to Wernigerode?

    TIA

I flew to Leipzig Halle with Ryanair from Stansted, then hired a car and drove across. It's easy to do by train though, only about 90 minutes and one change.

The Brocken is only accessible by train or on foot, so you don't need a car for that. You can get a few photos on the rest of the system by service train or bus, but having a car does make it a lot easier.

    Hi, thanks for the info',
I've been doing some looking on the internet and it looks as though I can fly from Manchester to Hanover, and get the train from there, it takes a couple of hours. it looks very do-able !

Hanover to Harz by train is a relatively easy journey.

If Manchester is handy there is also the Liverpool - Berlin option then shuttle train to Berlin Hbf, change for train to Magdeburg then local train to Wernigerode (travel time about 3 hours depending on connections)

That's the route I've used a couple of times and will be using it again in June. Since Flymaybe rescheduled their flights you can be in Wernigerode in time for dinner. Don't forget to look at the Harz Tour Card and the DB 'Happy Weekend Ticket' for cheaper fares.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

    Cheers gents.
The Manchester-Hanover Flybe flight arrives in Hanover at 20.40 so I'm looking at staying overnight in Hanover and an early-ish train to Wernigerode the following morning...

    Hi Pete,
That's what we did last time - staying at the Holiday Inn just a few mins walk from the terminal. This year Flymaybe must've changed their schedule as on Summer Saturdays they fly from MAN to HAJ arriving at 13.45 which saves overnighting at HAJ on the way out and MAN on the way back. We go on 20th June - are you going soon? Is it your first trip there? Let me know if I can help with any info.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

    Hello Ray,

many thanks for your offer of help, most welcome.

Yes it's my first trip to the Harz, my wife's happy to miss this trip, so I'll be travelling on my own, which I'm happy to do.

I'll send a pm with my plans so far, I'm sure you'll be able to help with a few bits of info.

    Cheers, Pete

P.M. received and reply sent last night. BTW forgot to mention that the Harz Tour Card is/was only available from the HSB shop in Wernigerode which is just off the Rathaus square on the street that leads to Westerntor station.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

I've always got mine from any staffed HSB station or tourist office. Surprised that should change.

All I can go off is that the staff at Wernigerode HSB booking office sent me to the HSB shop for the Tour Card. They could sell me the HSB 3 day ticket (currently 74 Euros) that is valid for the entire HSB network. This was in 2012 so maybe it has changed since or you had a more helpful member of staff.
    Cheers,
    Ray.
