Crich seems to be taking a break from operations after an ORR visit.

(People on Facebook complaining about ‘experts’ and how it looked ok to them!! )

I haven't seen anything posted anywhere as yet saying that it was the result of an ORR visit.
Where did that info come from?

When it said problems with the depot fan, I was thinking of a thing that stirs the air around  not the overhead electric string! :D

Seems the problem is with corroded traction poles and the overheads. As @Martin Perry has said, lots of people (especially on the Heritage Railway magazine Facebook page) moaning about why it's shut and how it's a disgrace and they shouldn't listen to the experts. So ignore the fact they've identified there's a risk of the overhead wires coming down, possibly still attached to the traction poles? Even the GM has said maintenance has been lacking over the last couple of years.

Thanks - would have thought it being the result of an ORR visit would have been mentioned on the Crich website somewhere, rather than having it in the local papers first....

Hope they get it sorted, very tight timeline as the ORR inspection was only Tuesday and they are suggesting they could be reopen tomorrow so one might assume a fundamental issue that can actually be solved reasonably quickly.

The ORR lifted the prohibition notice around one of the traction poles in the street, the other one which applies to the depot fan remains in place and prevents any trams moving out of the depot/workshop, and blocks public access to the depot and exhibition hall. Much bigger job to rectify. Quite what the point is in opening a tram museum where the public can’t even so much as see a tram beyond whatever’s in the workshop is a mystery to me.

There are some spare horse trams at Douglas, perhaps they could borrow a few. ;):D

I would be somewhat sceptical as to whether they’re managing to even cover the staff costs (there’s only very limited volunteer involvement in the retail and catering side of things), not to mention the potential damage to their reputation from disappointed visitors turning up to a tram museum hoping to at least see trams. There’s a couple of recent Tripadvisor reviews which seem to bear this out.

Yeah I get that but being party open getting some money must be better then not opening with no money coming and still having to pay bills and wages anyway...

I noticed Crich posted the following in reply to someone’s query on FB. Thought it was worth reposting here as it sheds a bit more light on what happened.

“They were scheduled to be replaced winter 2022/2023 following a report from an external professional assessor who assessed them to be currently safe. The ORR disagreed. We could appeal or argue however we have decided to just to get on with it and replace them.”
