Thefts and Vandalism

Discussion in 'Heritage Railways & Centres in the UK' started by rough-shunter, Dec 26, 2006.

Thefts from Embsay and KWVR (can you help?)

Unfortunately several thefts have taken place recently. These have ranged from carriage parts to reproduction cast 'Embsay' plates from the back of several benches on the station. A brakevan stove, a Tyers No.6 tablet machine and several LNWR groundframe parts were also taken. Also missing (although we do not know when it vanished) is the actual 'gong' from the former Skipton shunting gong that S&T were planning to return to use. Anyone who might come across such items is requested to contact the Railway so that appropriate action can be taken.

    Re: stolen from embsay

I think this proves the thief is something of a thicko as any such item would be easily recognised as stolen if trying to be sold on, hopefully should be easier to catch the dopey gimp too.

Indeed. The following repro signs have all been stolen from KWVR property recently:

Totems from : keighley, damems, haworth

    door plates from : ingrow

poster board header plates saying 'Worth Valley' from : damems

'do not trespass' signs (with worth valley totem on!) from : damems

and a variety of other small bits and bobs from Oakworth - including some particularly nice looking 1penny sweet vending machines.

All have been reported to police who are dealing

They all have limited value as - except the sweet machines - all are reproduction signs anyway (they are still costly for us to replace however!).

Again, if anyone happens to see these, please let us at the KWVR know.

I think you will find that these items are usually stolen to order mainly to an avid collector.

Yes it is sad when the few spoil it for the many.

West Yorkshire Police are hot on the case and have made a press release today with CCTV pictures. The story has been picked up by the Bradford Telegraph & Argus, and I understand other media has been in contact with Haworth Station. Perhaps they may be caught after all!

If it was for a serious collector I would have thought they would want the actual rather than reproduction totems. If they were then they might now be considering getting these replicas off their hands, so be vigilant now as it could start to come up

There have been a few threads and posts recently about various thefts and acts of vandalism taking place at heritage railway venues.

A friend of mine is attending the HRA meeting this weekend, and they are very keen to raise the profile of recent events. He will be suggesting the following:-

    * a dedicated THIEF WATCH section on the HRA website which will list items stolen, (and from whom and when) and the contact name and number of the investigating police officer, the crime number and any other relevant information -- the site also to contain basic "what to do if thieves strike" info such as contacting the police, getting the crime number, alerting local media, eBay, scrap yards, etc.
    * a similar column in the railway enthusiast press -- I understand that the HRA's press officer has had encouraging discussions with editors and I'm working with him to develop this
    * I want all member railways to give a link on their website to the THIEF WATCH page on the HRA website
    * I will suggest to the meeting that the HRA's Parliamentary contacts approach the Home Office and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to make them aware of the scale of the problem and to seek their assistance in alerting police forces to the fact that these crimes may well be linked and part of co-ordinated criminal activity rather than just localised incidents -- and that the nation's railway heritage is under threat from thieves (not just the cost of the items lost but the cost of security, repairs, loss of revenue and the dispiriting effect on hard working volunteers)
    * consider how best money might be raised for a reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for thefts and attacks on heritage railway sites (any ideas on who to approach gratefully received!)
    * any other relevant action delegates may suggest.

Could I take this opportunity to ask both the moderators, admin etc, and all the members to support these measures, and make this topic a "sticky" and for anyone to add to this any further instances or information relating to convictions etc.

I am sure that for once we have a topic we can all agree on!!!!!

Even though some of the items are repros its still very upsetting for those people involved with the restoration of the stations and locomotives to see these type of thefts by mindless idiots these people are not railway enthusiasts but vandals.
