    Very nice to see. Out of ignorance I need to ask, what was the purpose of Garratts on the British mainline system? As compared with, say, the tight curves that the WHR Garratts have to negotiate.

    One of the bigger potential advantages is that you can get a much larger diameter boiler within the pathetic british loading gauge. You can also get a lot more driving wheels round corners.

    But if one were being cynical one might say it enabled them to continue the Midland tradition of hauling freight with doubled headed dyspeptic six coupled locos with inadequate wheel bearings, but save money by only using one loco crew between the two...
