Could you not tell us what this is about? Which trust? Any other method of getting the information for those of us not signed up to Farcebook??

I certainly would not click on a link that came in a message without any explanation of where the link goes to. Yes, Facebook is visible in the URL but these can be forged by unscrupulous people.

If the link and free membership is so attractive, why not reassure us of that - and that it's not a nasty scam - by telling us just a little about it?

 

Rest assured it's not a scam. It's the Southwold railway trust. We now own Scaldwell and the free membership is an offer to anyone donating £150 or more. More details can be found in the trusts website also, but our Facebook group is proving really popular, getting over 100 members in its first week, as well as nearly £1000 in donations

Membership is apparently just £15, so why the 'perk' of free membership? Donations can be made of any amount which I would have thought might generate more money than just from those lucky folks with £150+ to spare.

PS; Like many here I don't do F/Book.

 

Sorry you feel that way, however as you say donations can be any amount, but we thought it a nice touch to offer the membership for those fortunate enough to be in a position to give more.

Not being on fb means you are missing a huge world of interesting stuff. just to illustrate here's a great picture form the Southwold page

no doubt you do , but my point is that there is so much interesting stuff posted on fb daily that you are missing out on, seemingly due to some preconceived ideas about fb.

 

Still find it bizarre that so many people still have misconceptions about Facebook. They really are missing out on the mine of news and information that's out there.

You are right. If I have a criticism of Facebook is that it tends to be ephemeral and open to all and sundry to leave comments, whereas a dedicated website tends to be easier to view if you want a permanent record and fewer inane comments. However, not using Facebook because of its ability to capture data about you is tinfoil helmet type phobia.

I would agree, that it would have been nice if the OP had indicated what one might find if one clicked on the link.

 

I have friends and family who use F/Book. A couple of years ago I tried it but decided that I had better ways of contacting them.

 

The problem with web-sites is that a) you need to make the effort to visit them, and b) they can be well out of date.

On Facebook, I get sent links to frequent updates on all the heritage lines and locos etc that are of interest to me. No need to use it to communicate with friends or family, you can just lurk if that's your style. Things have moved on, and just about all organisations of any worth have a FB page to keep their followers up to date.

 

Some people have moved on from FB and use snapchat and similar. I find it useful to keep up to speed with people I know but don't see that often and to share pictures with whomever on my contacts list wants to see them without me having to email everyone on my list of contacts, including those who have no interest in a particular pic. Whatever works for you.

 

I am not sure why mention of friends assume that my family and friends are all train nuts: the are not. All the info, about UK heritage railways I wish to read, can be found here, that is why I sign in daily. What I don't know I lose little sleep over. Neither has my dislike of F/Book anything to do with security. I just don't care for it.... simples.

 

As you didn't quote anyone I'm not sure who you were replying to, but certainly I wasn't assuming they were train nuts, I rarely if ever post anything rail related on facebook, although I am friends with a number who do and I wouldn't see their work if I wasn't on there....

 

Equally puzzled by that comment here too.
