A friend has acquired this object. I've no idea what is is; it was described as a wheel tappers hammer but I've never seen one even remotely resembling this. All steel, about 10" long and the round lump is about 1¼ diameter. The shaft(?) slightly curved at the end and has a blunt rounded point Stamped LMS. It could almost be a rope splicers tucking tool but a bit on the heavy side.

    Any ideas? Mystery Object.JPG

Is it a tool for lifting road drain covers?

Certainly not a wheel tappers hammer, they have a longer wooden shaft and much lighter head.

LMS? It will be a tool for dealing with a sticking drain cock. Lever it with one end, cosh it with the other. Simples...

No - that hammer's not big enough for that ;) Also, you'd need some way of tying it to the front of the loco so you could *keep* bashing the drain cock as you went along.

    Goods Guard's coal hammer?

I've no idea what an LMS brake van stove is like, but if they're anything like the GW pattern the flat portion looks as though it could fit in the slot in the lid to enable removal.
