If someone said "Finsbury Park Deltic" to me, the white window surrounds are what I would think of, not that blanked quarter-light.

Don't fret about it lads, it's not important, as mentioned in #267 ...............I'll live with it. I don't care if they turn Deltics out in primer, I just want them main line running.................with both engine humming Deltic music.
I remember a time when they ran an intensive daily schedule up and down the ECML (on both engines) Happy days.
KX - Edinburgh and return, then a KX - Edinburgh, was a normal day.
And don't let the 100mph Max speed fool you. They could 'nip on a bit' with an enthusiastic driver.
    Fabulous machines

I remember those days too and was so sad when the HSTs came along and usurped them :(

Apparently my namesake holds the record for highest speed in service - 125mph down Stoke Bank (where else?) in 1978. I've certainly timed one at 113mph approaching New Southgate.

It cheers an old man up seeing something like that. I hope Martin Walker sees the video, Martin put a lot into RSG when he owned it.

Wnxx suggests second PU wouldn't start . question , have the Power units in D9000 been fully overhauled or are they very high hours and ekeing out what left of the life in them

Depends what you mean by overhaul, suggestions are the blocks, and pistons, liners have never been done, as no spares exist.
However fuel pumps, injectors, hoses, fuel governers have been refurbished or renewed as possible.
The next stage in keeping the alive is to fully split, and rebuild, bear in mind the pistons are super complicated, with a copper crown, and don't exist.
DPS have 4 as withdrawn triangles available, assuming chosen because of low hours.
Standard thing to do once hours get high, is de-rate the engine.

so the one done at Paxman's for D9000/or D9016 after the fire at Berwick is potentially the last most major overhaul done

am i right in thinking the liners are plated as well adding to the complexity ?

Yes, and it did not really prove itself reliable in service.
Liners are chrome plated, as mentioned.
I doubt the tooling to rebuild is available, don't think a triangle, down to crank has ever been tried in preservation, just unit swaps.
The infamous leg out of bed by 55022 under Martin Walkers ownership was a copper crown detaching from the piston, with catastrophic consequences, a fairly common occurrence in BR service.

Napier chronicles shows pu406 pretty much dismantled, right down to liners out and then honed . the cases all parted . can you recall what in then succombed with , I have a feeling leaking liners

2 units are sidelined with leaking liners, one is in the NRM 55002, that was retaken back into museum custodianship.

The other looks to be 406, as shown in your pic links.
That unit will now be with LSL, as everything Martin Walker had went to them on sale, including many remanufactured parts, as well as a couple of marine engines.
Prior to that 406 is was with Deltic 9000 Ltd.
They (marine 5 series) proved unsuitable for mainline use, due to the vibration's associated with rail use.

406 could be in 9016, as the good engine from 16, was transferred prior to its transfer to Margate.

There is some interesting information on WNXX on D9000's PU's

406 does not appear to be in the engine , having been sent away for attention (presumably the leaking liners)

    User beatbox00 posted the following
PU 406 which was ex D9016 which had leaky liner seals has been away for overhaul for a few years but is not ready yet
PU418 had 2 quillshafts repaired and is in 22
PU434 has had a cracked cylinder liner replaced and is in 22
One of the power units in 22 ( PU418 i think )has recently been removed for a scavenge blower repair and then refitted a few weeks later
PU413 which threw a conrod is stripped down awaiting a rebulld

Be interesting to know who is undertaking the repairs, and if an engine is being sacrificed for parts, both in 16 must be u/s.
