On her way to Colton, from our friend, when she moves away from her temporary home to the UP workshops, he promises to post again.

Should be a right bunfight watching her make her way to Cheyenne

Lots of carrying on for sure - but it is a big deal , unlike the UK , here in North America resurrecting a loco after 50yrs , especially a loco of this size in an ' event ' - hope i get to see it actually running .....

Yes must admit we are a bit blasé about locos being moved around the country, mind you they are not quite as big as 4014.

... and the idea of a steam loco being pulled out of a park and onto the National Network would probably give the management of Network Rail multiple seizures :)

Can you imagine the cost if NR were involved.

Instead of severing and slewing the track, it would be installation of a point, amendment to 3000 miles of signalling, 5000,000 word risk assessment, and only to be moved on xmas day when its quiet.

The idea it has moved out of park where it has lain for 50 years, and now to be restored to running order is what appeals to me, and the engineering involved due to size is extraordinary.

Best of luck to all involved, it will make a great documentary for TV!!!!

Only to be expected when there is but one person on the Network Rail Executive who could be classed as a railwayman. (And that's stretching it.)

Union Pacific does have the advantage of owning both the track and the loco! To be fair UP have spent many weeks preparing 4014 for the move and the work will continue at nearby Colton before the loco makes the long journey to Cheyenne. Ray.

UP are very progressive steam wise for North America , not only having # 844 ( never retired ) ,# 3985 , now #4014 , plus in the roundhouse in Cheyenne, FEF-3 # 838 as well as TTT63 #5511 , both used as parts donors . -- Where does First Great Western keep their spare Castles?

First Great Western have a large collection of dilapidated and crumbling vintage stock - they use it on the bl**dy Salisbury to Bristol line…

Especially when "the country" its moving across will be a similar distance to the "The Great Britain" railtour.

So we had a Great gathering here in the UK… is the US going to show us how they do it next ?

Lets hope they don't decide to start now.. preserving a 142 for prosperity is not a good thing.
