Speaking from another area of the publishing universe, you can't please all of the people all of the time, indeed if you please some you are doing well, so give the lad a breather (publishers are like oil-tankers to change course and usually need to think its their idea too), so rather than being first to throw oil on the fire give him some space, some time to prove himself and then decide whether to aplaud the brass neck or turn away. There are an awfull lot of interests competing for time and space and he has to juggle them all, so lets let him make his own mind up. After all he does say he's one of us volunteer types and not just a journalist.

    Over to you chap.

Oh and I for one am looking forward to Tornado regardless of the moral debate of the ethics of new build over restoration and all that gubbins.

It would be an interesting experiment to see how mature the preserved railway industry is if SR were to make a big donation to the A1 Trust.

Perhaps it would hold a mirror up to what we are: a bunch of squabbling kids always eager for attention and never willing to look at the big picture?

No need to wait; look at the reaction the Bluebell got, after it received a donation from the Church of The Unmentionables.

No-one is saying that you don't Danny.

Couldn't you hold an emergency conference with the HR and RM editors to decide some sort of policy?

Sorry Danny it was i who suggested that all three mags should throw a wedge of cash in

Its not a bad idea and no doubt there are a few editors who would love to do it

But no doubt hands are tied

What would it achieve? We've already established that none of the mags can afford anything like the amount needed (enough to overhaul a moderately sized loco). And that the money will come eventually anyway. It seems foolish to spend the money on it in some huge joint venture.

Well you must present your evidence for that Chris. Where is it?

Considering that a 3.00 pound magazine could sell for just over 6000 each from each magazine would that be such a massive dent in profits or revenue over a financial year? I sincerely doubt it.

I don't quite understand why you say it would be foolish. How could such a jesture be foolish?

Well foolish probably wasnt the best word there. (Just an overtired brain with a lack of superlatives atm.)

But say you were the editor of one of the mags. You're given a very tight budget and told to produce as good a quality mag as possible. I doubt your employer, emap in SR's case would reacat to well to you saying "actually, Im not going to make so much profit this month, Im going to donate 50 grand to build a loco". I'm not sure how well they'd take that. Especially if what we read about emap going belly up is true.

Btw Danny, do you know what the current situation is regarding the transport section of emap?

Ah well depends how you sell it doesn't it?

SR have been pretty committed to the A1 Trust and I'm sure will sell many magazines once the locomotive steams and runs on the mainline.

But looking at it from emaps POV, it could be argued that for something as presegious as the A1 the funds will come eventually, they'll get the coverage of the loco anyway and sell the copies anyway.

I know there could be some sales increase after such a substantial donation, but I doubt it would be to the tune of £50,000 that emap would expect back after investing that money in the project.

It depends whether citing the donation as investment as a means of a return of capital.

I have quoted some figures as a means of how many magazines SR could sell to recoupe the 55,000 pounds outlay but I am not looking at it from a purely investment point of view. If the SR management (higher than Danny) realised what railway preservation was about perhaps they would realise that this is an opportunity that is going begging for a decent donor. It does not neccessarily require an investment with a return; it is more an altruistic vision.

Good o. It is difficult to gauge what people are saying and the way they say it sometimes on forums.

Well, we are still producing the mags quite happilly. What is going on upstairs stays there for the moment, and we are still making some wedge for the shareholders. I know sections of the business are up for sale but my reading is that they are in much bigger chunks than just the transport division alone.

On Tornado I just wish I could divert funds to help. But I feel the same about Betton, the Clan, Earlstoke, Beachy Head, Green Arrow.... etc. See the problem? Anyway over the years, we have supported the cause to the tune of tens of thousands in the amount of editorial space we have rightfully devoted to the project. So exciting it is now so close. And there are some mouthwatering plans in the offing as well.

Just seen a feature on "Tornado" on the BBC 2 "Working Lunch" programme. The A1 people come across as a very well-run and professional set-up.

Good show. Pity the Beeb didn't put contact details in. Great exposure though.
