I cannot recommend highly enough "Mendips Engineman" and
"Footplate Over The Mendips." Both are excellent reads and give
in depth views of the line and its day to day operation. There is a website
listing all the known locos that worked the line in BR days but
    I can't remember the url.

Thanks Spamcan, I'm sure I've read at least one of those in the past, probably from the library cos I haven't got them here at home, but I'll follow that up. always happy for a good railway read, even if its a second time. Cheers

I would definitely second the comment about Peter Smith's books - well worth a read and give comments about a lot of engines that worked over S and D

I am trying to recall where I have recently seen a picture of a 2251 0-6-0 heading out of Poole Yard for Templecombe on freight, but cannot at the moment. Ex GWR locos worked the full length of the line but not sure how often they got as far as Poole - not very often from my personal sightings of S and D workings.

If you can get hold of a copy of branch line to burnham on sea you will see Western engines on the branch.

Thanks DH and Simon for the info. Thats given me something to do and should help to fill a gap in my education about the S & D. Its a fact it seems that the S & D has an affectionate feel to it. Perhaps the extreme nature of its role ie small brach type locals, Heavy expresses, holiday trains, single line workings, double headers, bankers, !!! List goes on. Wonderful stuff....

The S&D was remarkable, I've always had a soft spot for it but then I was raised to! Driving a 7F along the route on Rail Simulator was very satisfying. As my girlfriend lives just outside Bath I have visited Green Park/Queen Square several times and it is a loverly station, just a shame Sainsbury's got there before me!
