138 isn't running around at all. Due to its rather tired bogies and fuel consumption it is very much a spare loco for high days and holidays. Next year we will have 87 and 143 on coal as the mainstay, with the possibility of Mr Waterman's 109 arriving at some point. The two Funkeys, K1 and Lyd will all be available too.

I know its only been running a very few months, but what is the considered opinion on Lyd in terms of its performance ? It it living up to its original expectation or was that in some respects unknown due to the modifications from the original design ?

It will certainly look great once its repainted.

It's performing better than expected. It's already heaved nine up the hill on the FR and we plan to try it with 12 - the service loading for a Double Fairlie. It's possible it could end up as a ten car rated loco on the FR and five on the WHR. It rides nearly as smoothly as a Fairlie as well.

    And it looks great now.

Ffestiniog Maroon or Green, with red lineing. Some big letters reading F(F)ESTINIOG perhaps to finish it off.

If its better than expected, then that can only be an encouragement to anyone else thinking of building a sister Loco.

How many carriages were they rated for on the original L&B ?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Lyd had a rather historic role today as the first Harbour station pilot for the first through passenger trains from Caernarfon to Porthmadog....

Image from the Harbour station webcam attached - and I'm sure the usual suspects will be providing plenty of photos of today's action at some point!

Lyd should be out on the Platelayers' Special tommorrow too...

The reason is probably that Barrie Hughes is having a busman's holiday so there is no daily news update. This resource is without parallel and really should be an object lesson to other lines.

Lyd's double heading the Platelayers' Special today with Taliesin. Nine cars - that's roughly equivalent to 18 on the FR. We've sent out for extra beer.
Barrie has been invited along for the ride.

BTW, the main F&WHR site is also a good source for news www.festrail.co.uk as is the railway's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/festrail

A photo of Lyd's new livery can be found on the Welsh Highland stop press page.

I believe Paul L. will happily arrange a brief repaint into BR Blue if someone pays for it!

The small smokebox number plate looks a bit odd, but nice to see a what if livery. Personally I can't wait to see her in SR Green.

I am currently sitting right behind Lyd departing Blaenau. She looks and sounds absolutely stunning; given that it is double headed with Taleisin, it is interesting that the combined age of our motive power is only about 12 years.
