RIP to another Preservation Pioneer; the worry now - especially with the reported imminent retiral of such as Phillip Bentham (NYMR) - is whether sufficient knowledgeable and qualified people are coming through to maintain the momentum of current growth ?

Can only echo the above RIP Mr Garraway, as time marches on more of those pioneers go but are not forgotten and people like me whom without the pioneers wouldn't have a hobby will always be grateful of all the work you did.

The preservation movement is 60 years old and the subset of skills required for running our heritage railways is only partially shared with the "big railway" of old. We should be bringing on our own generation of managers now, the supply of ex-BR steam era managers will not last for ever anyway.

Lovely man, one of the original pioneers. RIP.
However, in order to run (and grow) a heritage railway, there is a far wider sub-set of skills needed than that of ex-BR steam era managers - who are only part of the equation.

BR steam finished in 1968. I doubt that there's such a thing as a British Railways steam era manager. What you have now are heritage railway steam era managers. There are quite a lot of them about, too.

It's the same piece that appeared on the Graun website last month. Written by Peter Johnson.
