I passed 1450 on a low loader today on the Severn Bridge heading from Wales to England. Any idea where she was heading?

I'd love to too. Somehow doubt that running load 1 on a flat line is going to be the occasion though!

You should have been in Blaenavon for our September Gala if you wanted to here the loco work, the owner himself said he hadn't heard her work like that before! Keep your eye out we may have it back one day!

Which 14xx ran on the Dawlish Donkey's in the 90s? I can just about remember them, it was the only holiday to Devon where we never got to the PDR or SDR as we were so busy walking from Dawlish to Dawlish Warren and back!

Any chance of having her on the TPO at the GCR?!! Give her a chance to stretch her legs! Wasn't it the GCR where 1450 did her 60mph test prior to going mainline? I was once on an auto train at an 'undisclosed line' and the driver opened up the loco properly (pretty sure it was a 14XX), the acceleration would rival any DMU, was quite incredible.

I agree that 1450 (along with 3717) put on an impressive show at the P&B, back in September. It really is a lovely machine, a real 'chocolate-box' picture-postcard loco in immaculate condition. I'm told it sounded a bit impressive too, on the climb up through Cwmdwyfran on the Gwili...

Go on GCR. Stick it on a TPO...you know you want to!!

    Cheers,

    Phil.

Gets my vote . I'm sure we'll hear the old 'it's not big enough' line (heard it used re: 4141 back when it was in ticket (in its healthier days too)) but I seem to remember those 60mph tests were done load 3 and a CCT, so load 3 at 35mph should be no problem for it on a flat line :).

EDIT: just looked through some mags, turns out it was worked harder than I remembered - load 5 and a CCT, so all the more reason why a TPO should be no problem for it!

Agreed, they do take off rather well! Appearances are very deceptive with the 14xx class and given the nod they were/are fully capable of some seriously fast running. The most impressive TPO run I've seen at the GC was with the N2 several years ago - the larger locos in comparison have been mostly lacklustre so best not to discount tank engines from being capable of impressive TPO demonstrations. I would put down a fair wedge of money on 1450 going at it like the proverbial off a stick given the chance!

Weren't there tales of 14xx powered autotrains keeping up with or even outrunning expresses?

The Chalford Auto ran from Gloucester to Chalford on the Golden Valley main line. It was renowned for its turn of speed.

They reputedly used to give Jubilee or Peak - hauled expresses on the Midland line a good race between Standish Junction and Tuffley Junction.

Found this sequence on youtube which gives a flavour of 1450's mainline exploits in 1998. Couple of nice shots of it going through Dawlish at a fair speed, suprisingly quiet!
