Class! Riches of motive power. Some times little things like that make you realise how far the railway has come.

Back to steam for the bank holiday weekend! We've had a good lot of rain over the last 24 hours with more forecast, some quite impressive thunderstorms too. I understand it'll be the two 2-8-0s out to start with, seen as the safest to begin with.

it’s still tinder dry. Both Haulwen and L150 are good to go but they won’t be moving until we have more rain. Matt

Visited yesterday - due to the fire risk the 03 was the motive power for our 4 coach train which ran as far as Llwyfan Cerrig. Apparently it had difficulty reaching 4th gear and we pootled along at about 15mph. At Llwyfan Cerrig the engine...

I think everyone is on the same sheet here. For too long Mk 1s have been cinderella vehicles and 30 years ago there was a good supply, so if one got a bit tired you could easily get another in reasonable condition. As @Bikermike says that supply...

to respond to the “rude” paragraph…. the point I was making is that many MK1’s have beeen in service for 30 years (plus) on some heritage lines without major repairs. Case in point our TSO 4420 - arrived in 1993 and in constant use since...

The point about Mark 1s coming to the end of their BR life has been made sporadically on the forum over the last few years (I know I have raised it a few times (*)) There is a looming issue that railways are not putting enough into carriage...

Yes, I'd heard similar figures on the Bluebell - and as you say, that is just for getting some stuff attended to externally, we still do significant work ourselves once they come back. Agreed. At the Bluebell we do trimming work as a contract...

Repairing carriages on a contract basis is expensive. We have spent a six figure sum on 2 MK1’s which were both operating prior to repairs. In both cases we could have done even more work to them. Many MK1’s are coming to the end of their...
