    You did well to get all those shots.

    Only one disappointment, and it's a big one, is that I couldn't detect any diesel noise on any of them. That is going to make one Nat Pres member unhappy: nothing to moan about!

    Sorry, the horrific noise from the distant M4, the track workers, and the birds drowned out the diesel tho My fault, I was at the wrong end at Queen Adelaide.

    Grateful to Mr Knowwun for his record of a very good day out,one that I was glad to be on and not filming.I was assured by a footplate member at Broxbourne and a support crew member at Hanwell that in each case there was no diesel assistance ,including specifically, the climb to the North London Line.Lots of fast running mileage over the day and plenty to look at during the slow bits.Foxton felt slightly faster than Meldreth , and both more than 60.

    Correct but yesterday was a measured business with the DL on tickover it seemed. And as I said, speaking as someone who tries to avoid trips with a diesel presence, there was nothing of concern yesterday. In fact the running in East Anglia was much as you could have envisaged it 50 years ago and the locals appreciated the relatively rare visit of steam to the Liverpool Street - Cambridge line. Moment of the day was an Abellio crew who decided that steam was the preferred way to travel and hopped on at Cambridge for the run up to Ely. It was one of those "do as I say but not as I do" moments. As we bowled along at full chatter in the low seventies, down went the window and out popped the heads. Smiling faces, excited conversation. Just what you expect from youngsters but not forty somethings!

    OK, from the horses mouth (Mick Valla who was driving):

    "no assistance going down or up to hitchin but as we did not stop for water needed to save a bit so hitchin- Stevenage and Welwyn- potters bar, up hill"

    So there you go - only to avoid running short of water and potentially causing expensive delays. He also said Broxbourne - Elsenham was the best part of the day.

    OMG. A steam railtour tomorrow from Didcot that is likely to have a diesel tagged on at the rear.

    I talked to someone from West Coast about water. Although Broxbourne is ok on the down route, it cannot be taken there on the return. (No loop). The alternative - Harlow - is not now available apparently. I don't know whether or not that affected the return route but the ECML is certainly easier and accesses the North London line further round. March to Hanwell without taking water is quite a time - four hours.

    I didn't need to respond to the report email, I saw a mushroom cloud west of Heathrow, and flights are being diverted.

    32 posts have been moderated.. I suspect thats a new record.
    I had to put my drink down reading them... i'd have been changing my tshirt every few minutes otherwise.

    Fair enough. I'm with you on the angle - I have a similar shot of Britannia sat at Cambridge from a couple of years back.

    Yes, the running from Stratford right round to Hitchin on the return was superlative and a tad unexpected. Given the load the climbing was good and especially up to Ashwell.
