My own personal favourite was the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe on the garden route in South Africa until the floods killed it a few years ago.
Steam hauled with views of the Indian Ocean on one side and mountains on the other.

It was indeed pretty spectacular; the section over the lagoon especially so.

Local tourism guys are still hopeful that they can get it back in operation but I doubt it.

We were in a hotel opposite that lagoon, lovely area.

Flamsbana is certainly a lovely ride. Switzerland has many of the worlds finest and most beautiful train journeys. Toulon to Ventimiglia on the French Cote d'Azur is good too! This summer I rode the Rocky Mountaineer with the family from Vancouver to Calgary - this features some truly spectacular scenery too. There are many more contenders - it would be interesting to see other suggestions here.

How about the climb to Asmara?

I'd post a picture but when I try to upload it, I get a message that there is a problem. I have compressed the image too. Any ideas why?

They dropped us off down on the plain for a run by. Go and stand anywhere you like, they said.
    Any mines here?
    Oh no, Sir.

5 miles down the road, another run by. Go and run up to that mound.
    Any mines around up there?
Oh no Sir, definitely none at all here....:)

Any mountain line with climbing spiral loops, bridges across gorges etc will be good.
As well as the Flamm and Swiss lines as mentioned above the Nice/Ventemille to Cuneo/Turin line via Tende is also excellent.

Let's hear it for the Welsh Highland Railway - Aberglaslyn Gorge, and the northern approach to Rhyd Ddu especially.
