Fred are you referring to the Olton Hall incident, if so the diesel was on the back from the start, as it had been on the previous run, and it was being used also as on the previous run.

As for it being a voluntary system - do some more research.

All this speculation (and repetition) isn't moving things any closer to knowing exactly what the original infringement was and therefore how this might be resolved. What seems probable though is that irrespective of the weather, Network Rail is not going to allow anything to happen involving steam in the north east with WCR until the outcome of arbitration. And that is presumably because WCR did something that NR believes they shouldn't have. We just don't know whether this may or may not have been the first time either and the ban was simply NR saying "enough is enough".

All I can hope is that this resolves itself so that we get more transparency over the critical matters that impact on steam activities on the network. All TOCs (plus loco owners and owning groups) must have that clarity so they know where they are and don't find themselves in this situation again.

Apologies - my understanding is that it is currently "advisory" but I can't think why I put "voluntary". Even that may be incorrect but that is my understanding of the current situation although I am happy to be corrected by someone prepared to state the actual position rather than be criticised for getting it wrong.

It may have already been said but, as an occasional traveller and lineside snapper, all this disruption of mainline steam in the north east cannot be doing any good for the future prospects of reliable steam mainline tours in this area. Are the punters going to able to trust tour operators to provide the tours booked?
On a quick look at RTCS future list I see several planned for the Newcastle area but not one starting or picking up here, or does the usual christmas run to London still run?

Come south all ye steam engines, come south, where the land is flatter, and the local NR regions and TOCs are much more friendly, come south, the grass is greener here.....

What you seem to forget that it's only the East of the Pennines that has the problem, just seen 6233 heading north at a brisk pace and not a diesel in sight.

Not running any more, Nigel Dobbing blamed 'poor bookings and operational difficulties' in his response after people criticised RTC for advertising the tour (again) as being steam hauled both ways last year - see http://www.national-preservation.co...-23rd-november-2013.153027/page-2#post-702403

There's a lot of raiding parties being organised, it would just be another item on the list :)
Indeed she could bring a few items back with her...

Hey-up, I feel a digression coming on, steady lads!
Perhaps under independence there may be more tours starting from just over the border and heading north.

So the 1 in 42 of Hemerdon is flatter than the 1 in 75 of Shap? Have you seen the gradient profile of the Devon Banks?
