Thought I would add to the wagon progress reports by adding our latest example.
ex GWR MACAW 103310 this was recovered from BREL York in the mid 80s as a crane runner for the works rail crane which we also purchased.
Work involved on the wagon over the last 6 months has been Shotblasting, painting, reflooring, replacement of missing body sections(From service as a crane runner) final painting and hand lettering.
Further details of our wagon stock can be found at http://www.yorkareagroup.co.uk/
Next wagon due out will be Shark 993894
All vehicles in the fleet are considered as part of the working fleet and do not constitute any part of the NYMR demo freight train.

Bit of a long gap since my last update.
Since then a number of wagons have come in for attention.
2 Grampus, 2 Plate wagons, A 15t Coles Crane, My NER Snowplough (Repaint and Bodywork) and an LNER 1941 Brakevan.
Currently though we are working on another Plate wagon B934836
This has been sat neglected for about 4 years with rotting timber flooring. This was shovelled out and the task of cleaning down the frames has started in earnest. Condition wasn't too bad as we had previously repainted and refloored this vehicle about 20 years ago. So in general a quick run over with a sanding disc has been all that is needed.
However a different story is told when any area in contact with the flooring has required attention from the needle gun and in some cases new plate work has needed to be welded in.
As said previously our fleet is mainly for working wagons rather than display vehicles so they will get knocked and may get some abuse. Therefore we do not restore to pristine condition but instead they get repaired if needed and then repainted retaining most of the dings and dents that these wagons get in their working life.
Anyway attached are 2 photos showing progress on the painting and 2 hours effort with a needle gun.

Latest wagon to go through our hands is Plate wagon B934386.
I have added a gallery on the website showing some of the work done.
    York Area Group

We have also completed another plate wagon 932267 to the same standard.
Some work is also ongoing on our 15t Coles Crane.
The next wagon in for attention is awaiting offloading before we can get our hands on it. Another Plate wagon 934279.
Hopefully this is just in for a quick repaint and brake refurb, but we will see.

Another long gap between updates, partly due to winter pw work and all available wagons being in service.
Now the running season has started its back to the needle guns and paint brushes.

Over the last few years all of our plate wagons have now been overhauled and we now have 6 available for traffic or even for a photo charter if you are interested, prototypical for the Teeside area of the 60s.

The Coles 15t crane is still being worked on as and when we have a lull in something else.
Plasser 12t crane having some attention as well.
Sollinger Hutte Ballast Regulator general servicing.
Tamper 73214 was to have some bodywork attention but this has now been cancelled as we have bought another one.

The Shark Ballast plough is in for a roof refelt, paint tidy up and brake cylinder service.
Does anyone have any tips on removal of this from a shark?

Our RUDD spoil wagon is next in, bodywork, repaint, removal of electrical gear and Air brake overhaul all being planned.

That lot should keep us busy for a day or two anyway.
If anyone in the N Yorks area is interested in wagons etc we would be pleased to see you at Newbridge most fridays.

As I mentioned earlier does anyone have any tips for the removal of a Vac cylinder from a Shark Ballast plough?

    About time for an update.
Since the arrival of the Tamper 73250 from the Kent and East Sussex last year.
A team have been gradually working through it making sure it will work properly, any hydraulic pipes are not leaking and replace if needed. Some bodywork issues have been tackled but most of that can wait for the moment.
Now that we are happy with it we are currently running a training programme to get our current operators passed out on its use. There are significant differences in its operation to our other tamper 73214. Following on from the regular operators we are also training up some more volunteers who should be able to pass out in the next year.

The tamper has now been fully tested with a couple of little tamping sessions.
12 lengths on the Newbridge relay continuation from last year, 14 lengths for the Environmental agency work at Hunting bridge. Then the full test 1800 yards on the Levisham Straight relay.
All sites have now had 2 passes as well as a number of other maintenance sites.
All in the company of the Regulator either ploughing the ballast or brushing up afterwards.
    Levisham 24-3-14 73250.jpg
    Levisham 24-3-14 GR5077.jpg

Now that the Loco crews have got the railway back to themselves, we are reverting to our other favourite pastime of wagon repairs for some of us. Others are going plate oiling.

Completed the refitting of 4 new springs to our Shark Ballast plough on friday.
The next vehicle in looks like being the LNER BV for a Vac Cylinder overhaul then one of the Lomacs for a full shotblast, repair, redeck and repaint.

Should keep us busy for the summer.

    Anybody fancy joining us?

    Update time again.
Quite a bit has happened over the last few months.
Firstly we acquired a Seacow Ballast Hopper from DBS at Doncaster DB 982667 this arrived back in April.

The LOWMAC 217315 came into the shed for its Vac Cylinders to be overhauled. Strip down and repaint.
So far the decking has been stripped off, Frames fully needle gunned, brake gear stripped and cleaned off then refitted. Vac cylinders have been removed and sent to Pickering C+W for overhaul. These are 2 small diameter cylinders so may take a while especially as it seems one of them may need to be replaced.
The underfloor girder gridwork needs to be fully replaced as the original I beams are wasted away. As this wagon is one of the working fleet of PW vehicles it needs to be able to carry its intended design weight. This looks like being a contract job to replace the steelwork.
Once the floor is out of the way then work on the new decking can start, timber on order 7 inch x 2 1/2 inch from a local woodyard.
Painting on going as work progresses.

We sadly had to let the 2 Walrus Ballast hoppers go for scrap as they were beyond any form of economic repair. They joined an ex SR Borail in an exchange for 4 more Seacows / Sealion from TJ Thompsons yard at Stockton on Tees. 3 paid for by York Area Group and the 4th by the NYMR
    They are:-
    DB982595 – 1972 - YAG – 26 – 27 JUNE 2014 from TJ Thompsons at Stockton ex Tees yard

    DB982608 – 1972 – YAG - 26 – 27 JUNE 2014 from TJ Thompsons at Stockton ex Tees yard

    DB982619 – 1972 - YAG - 26 – 27 JUNE 2014 from TJ Thompsons at Stockton ex Tees yard

    DB982849 – 1973 – NYMR - 26 – 27 JUNE 2014 from TJ Thompsons at Stockton ex Tees yard

A start has been made on getting these hoppers back in traffic.
The intention is to retain the dual brakes on the Sealion but keep the Air brakes on all of them as the prime system. Too much would be involved in sourcing and refitting 4 sets of Vac gear.
DB 982667 is currently having its Air tanks, Distributor valve and Air Cylinder removed and sent for examination and certification.
The bodywork externally is being derusted and repainted. 667 is going to be in Olive Green. Discussions are ongoing as to whether or not all 5 will be the same.

Plasser Crane 81516 is having a bad year not having worked since christmas, with what started as coolant problems. It would use anything up to 4 gallons of coolant an hour and no indication as were it was going.
The decision was taken to take it out of service and investigate. Eventually after the whole engine block had been removed we are replacing the original engine with the engine we bought as a spare a few years back plus replacing other parts that need renewing like the Cushion Drive (£1500 plus from GKN ).
The block is due for a test run up in a few days time then it should be refitted fairly soon after.

Tamper 73250. This saw its debut in service on the renewals last winter and the Levisham straight renewal early this year.
After a few hiccups and niggling problems. The tamper seems to be working as it should do.
Now attention is switching from manual operation of the tamper to reintroducing computer control of the lift and line systems.

If anybody is interested in joining us we would welcome any assistance. Contact via the Contact page on the website.
Wagon work tends to be on Fridays and with the On Track Machine work team on Sundays.
Track gang volunteers go out with the permanent staff gang all days midweek track patrolling and on Sundays, currently, are plodding on with the essential task of Fishplate Oiling.

A shame those Walruses (Walri?) went for scrap as they're a lovely vehicle. We have parted with ours on the GCR recently but it has found another home in preservation where it will be restored. And as for the Borail - useful vehicles, what state was it in? Have Thompsons disposed of it or are they offering it for re-sale? (I can think of someone who may have been interested, although I think he probably now has a suitable alternative vehicle.)

The cost to try and make good any of the units sold as scrap was so expensive as to make it completely financially unviable.
The costs to refurbish or complete re build was fully investigated, but as said, beyond any economical repair.
It's always said when something has come to the end of its useful life, but unfortunately it does happen. Not even enough good bits to save one as exhibit I believe, but the new to NYMR lineup should look good after a repaint.

It's with thanks to the York Area group that we have these new (ex scrapyard) models. Sounds strange when you say it like that, but at least they are able to give many more years of service after attention and refurbishment.

The BORAIL was looked at by someone from the GCR but went no further.
It would have needed a full refloor as the existing floor was generally non existant. That would have been the easiest part of the restoration I reckon.
The vehicle may still exist but you would to contact Thompson's yourself to see if it was available.
The Hoppers main problem was that the frames bent under load which meant that the hopper doors were impossible to open.
The main frames were seriously corroded away and had very little strength left.
We had a price quoted just to replace the main frame only and nothing else, we bought 4 Seacows instead. with some change to spare.

Sounds like the Walruses were indeed pretty well gone. 'Ours' (it was privately owned) needed extensive re-skinning and new doors at least, and its former owner would have funded this but when last used it was found to be too high-sided for our p.way to load from ground level, so we have standardised on the smaller hoppers instead. Without any real prospect of use, he decided to part with it instead. I believe it has gone to a good home.

I do shudder a bit when preservationists use the term "beyond economical repair". If normal economics was applied to steam railways most of them would never have been preserved in the first place. In this case I don't doubt that you made a sensible choice but it's an unfortunate situation to have arrived at.

In our case we do need to be a bit hard hearted, as much as we don't like it.
Our fleet is the working wagons on the NYMR and as such they are expected to earn their keep.
We are short on space as is everywhere, so if we have no further use we will try and pass it on to another group as we did with a GWR Ballast Hopper to Rocks By Rail the other year.
However if their is no response from an advert stating vehicles available then the scrap man will come calling.
Currently Tank wagon LP202 is up for disposal now with some 21t Coal hoppers over the next year or so being added to the list.

End of year update time I think.

Following the purchase earlier this year of the fleet of Seacows and 1 Sealion.
Work has been progressing very slowly on getting them back into service.
DB 982667 is currently being worked on as a guinea pig.
First task was to strip off the old lighting units and associated conduit as we don't think we will have need of this system.
Lights cleaned up and rewired and made into additional work lights and very good they are too.
Air Brake system, Distributor removed and due to be sent for overhaul, air tank removed and tested and certified awaiting refit.
Actuating cylinder, removed after a struggle, overhauled and tested.
Remainder of the brake system being checked through and worked on.

Bodywork, Outside the body is in not too bad a condition and has been descaled, primed, undercoated throughout and part repainted into Olive Drab Green as built.
Hopper platework and some internal steel work is in a bad state especially where stone dust gathers so a fair amount will need to be cut out and patched.
The hopper doors are all going to need removing as they all bind to some extent. This being one of the main faults in traffic in latter years.
The doors all need reskinning due to the amount of rust lamination buckling the skins and causing the doors to jam.
Getting them out is a pig of a job though. The main pivot pin has a castellated nut 66mm across the flats with split pin.
At the other end of the pin where it fits into the support socket is a small locating stud about 6mm in diameter, if the nut seizes on the thread for any reason then that stud is likely to shear off making it impossible to remove the pin without cutting it. We have priced up new pins at about £150 each and there are 6 per wagon.
So far the Cow is winning with 4 cut and 2 removed.
Only 4 more wagons to go.

Alongside this we are reflooring a Lowmac 217315.
However not just the timber deck but the supporting steelwork as well.
This involves removing an I beam gridwork and having a new one fabricated.
Removal of the old fastening rivets by burning them out ready for the new fasteners to be fitted.
As part of the work the brake system has been overhauled including recertifying the 2 Vac cylinders.
Renewal of part of the main vac pipe is also having to be done due to corrosion around the brackets.

With the Tamper 73250 bought from the KESR last year.
This had its original systems renovated and recalibrated back to spec and proved itself on last winters relays.
Duringthe summer we have been removing the old TPWS equipment and OTMR gear that is no longer required. This has been passed on to the MPD for steam loco use to Whitby.

Computer control has been upgraded and is still being reinstalled but will not be operational this winter as the renewal work on the NYMR is due to start in the new Year.

Plasser 12t Crane has had a new engine fitted after serious coolant problems with the old engine.

Ongoing maintenance on the rest of the NYMR working wagons fleet continues.

    Happy Christmas etc to all.

The 15t Coles is awaiting specialist welding on the jib.
The Plasser was running this week but now needs the insurance exam before it can be used.

    LNER design brake van E246710.
Full reblocking of the brakes was on the cards today.
WE had a delivery during the week of a consignment of brand new brake blocks from the Foundry for the 2 Brake Vans LNER 246710 and BR955225
The job went much easier than Seacow door pin removal. Straight forward apart from three bow girder ends having shed their old bushes from the blocks.
These had to be cut off before the new castings would fit . A small amount of bedding in was required on the last block.
This wagon is now ready for C & W testing and final brake adjustment.
When we get the vans swapped over in a few weeks 955225 will be tackled. This is likely to be a bit more work intensive as it is double blocked.

Lowmac 217315 has now had the full floor gridwork cut out and all rivets from the mounting brackets through the frames carefully burnt out.
Now nearly ready to get the new gridwork made up and installed.
