Thought I'd start a general thread for the DCE this year - 44932 on the first one of 2014, currently about 5 late through Brentford.

Filmed it at Totton, 44932 merely keeping the boiler warm and the cylinders lubricated, and the box on the back doing all the work.

    And here it is.

You can tell how little work 44932 is doing when the 47 on the back drowns out the noise of the cars and lorries rushing by on the A36 behind me.

Could be! I'll blame it on a typo.

Yes it is but no one should be surprised. I can't think that this arrangement gives the RTC or WCR any joy as they must know that they are on a long term loser with this going on whether it is because of the use of an underpowered loco given the total train weight, operational reasons or NR requirements.

There is a real conundrum here. The summer months are when traditionally the greatest number of steam charters are planned but this is when there is the greatest potential for disruption because of fire risk or unavailability of locomotives due to the greatest demand on them.

At least one tour operator has some sense then, unlike some, instead of running it with "alternative" motive power so the punters have to pay.

If the ticket sales for 16th July are as low as reported for yesterday's train, then NR and the FBU are perhaps doing RTC a favour? Maybe they'd do better running once a fortnight?

Perhaps now people have now got the message & are not risking their hard earned on something which probably won't produce what they are paying for.

What's hauling tomorrow's DCE? UK Steam Info shows 44932 on one page but 70013 on another.

And without looking at any pictures I'm guessing that for at least two reasons there will be a diesel on the back. But I'm prepared to be wrong.

Yes Al I am sure you are correct. Despite yesterday being the hottest day of the year here (83.1F) the New Forest Fire Index is currently LOW so no need at all for the DL to push but I bet it will. I am not even going to waste my time and petrol going out to fot it.
