A great shame about 70013 yesterday after a protracted mainline absence, this happens. Went brilliantly up to the return.

I raced down to Bishopstone to see 70013 on the outward leg, then went just up the road to Southease to see her being dragged back to Brighton. She sounded great tackling Bishopstone bank, the cylinder beats were all correct and the driver in the 33 at the back wasn't giving her a helping hand either. I saw her at Tonbridge on the return, sounding awful. Mistiming and not putting any effort into hauling the train at all. What went wrong? Such a shame, great engine and was good to see her on the mainline again.

A quick clip of 44932 at Leigh this evening, well done to RTC for doing something a bit different.

Almost certainly the RCTS Sussex tour of 7/10/62 hauled by Terrier 32636 and E6 32418.

Thanks for that. Quite a long time then, no wonder so many came out for both tours. The fields outside Bishopstone station seemed very busy.

I did get a glimpse of 44932 on my way out this morning at Haywards Heath but was heading out so didn't get time to see her arrive or depart. Could here her safety valves from my home just up the road from my station though.

My Dad also thinks that this is probably the first time since 1965 that we've had steam hauled trains on the Eastbourne line in two consecutive days running.

I couldn't make a shot at this trip as I was out of the country, so I was looking forward to seeing a shed load of good video. With a few notable exceptions I am appalled by the lack of footage from the usual suspects. With rare steam milage and locations involved I was expecting to see lots of different locations, with some well planned and audacious loco chasing (this timetable was prime and ripe with such opportunities). Ok so ollie got a spanner in it works but hey, come on fellas. Bad show what!

I suspect the Saturday run was routed via Redhill to avoid a slow crossover (25mph) and conflict at Stoats Nest Junction, in the hope that the cross at Earlwood would be less disruptive. I was at Earlswood and an up FCC working was held for several minutes to allow 70013 to cross. The Sunday run took the Quarry line as planned.

according to the 70013 facebook page she suffered valve problems and had to be worked very carefully which may explain any Diesel involvement

Thats very wrong on so many levels. To keep unpleasantness between others down to a minimum every healthy forum needs at least one dislikable, moaning, irrational contributor to act as an outlet and target. You should be grateful and thankful we have one who is so very good at it so consistently.

Saturday went up through Hildenborough, the Sunday trip went via Redhill. Saw 70013 a various places including Newhaven and Tonbridge, sounding terrible on the return leg, shame. Saw the Black 5 at Tonbridge in the evening, sounding really good, with no assistance from the diesel at all. Could hear here working right the way through Leigh I would have thought!
