BR lined black for the first half of it's ticket and then a form of SR green for the second half.

I think I remember reading an article by Keith Sturt saying that the group all wanted BR black and that the loco was being built to its BR (theoretical) condition to suit. Not really up to me, but if I won the euromillions and offered a hefty cheque to see it in Brighton umber, what differences would there be that needed to be modified?

I'm with you in LBSC condition!

Main differences would be the shape of the cab (which would require a new upper part of the cab , roof and front); shape of dome, height of chimney. Depending on your exact era, the tender may or may not have coal rails, but if it did, they wouldn't be backed at that period. If you got really picky, you'd also need to add bogie brakes, though they disappeared pretty quickly and I suspect no-one would notice if you left them off!

None of which is especially hard: they would be the kind of things to contemplate round about the first overhaul if money were available.

Thanks chaps! Would be lovely to see it in LBSC colours but probably need a rake of Brighton bogies to go with it and that may be a stretch... I'll get buying the lottery tickets!

i suspect most true Brighton fans dont like the Marsh Umber... it smacks of Marsh's dislike of the Stroudley locos and reminds one of what happened to dear old Stroudley single ABERGAVENNY. the H2 Atlantics were a Lawson Billinton design and much better than the H1 Atlantics. apart from Marsh's I3 superheated tank locos (a tank version of Robert Billinton's B4 locos) and the H1 he borrowed from the GNR and the J1 and J2 were abject failures.
an H2 in Maunsell green with numberplates attached is a vision of pure beauty in my eyes!
    cheers,

*****AM NOT STARTING A LIVERY DEBATE***** However, what liveries did the Atlantics carry? I'm assuming umber, olive green, malachite, and BR black? Was there a wartime variant?

    hi dan,
i think you have the liveries spot on. the H2 Atlantics were such highly regarded locos by the ex- LBSCR depots they were maintained in green throughout the war to the best of my knowledge.
slight deviation was the LBSCR habit of running in locos still in grey undercoat (sometimes mistakenly referred to as 'dove grey') before being finally painted in Umber in the Brighton paintshop.
    cheers,
    julian

As far as I am concerned, any colour will do as long as it is in steam and moving! Looking forward to it.

Livery aside, I feel I must comment on the (visual at least) quality of this new build, which looks absolutely superb ! It certainly sets the standard to aim for, for the rest of the projects, without taking anything away from them at all. Well done the Atlantic team, this is museum quality work, almost looks a shame to use it !!!

As has been said in other threads, the people building a loco can paint it whatever colour they like. Perhaps over a period they may repaint this one in a variety of liveries. Purely as a matter of curiosity, however, I would be interested to know why they have chosen to start with the livery that the original carried at the end of its career, which was and is shared by many other locos, rather than a livery associated with the loco's essential nature as an LBSCR product.

I believe there has been a certain element of "he who pays the piper ..." from a significant donor. I'm sure over time other liveries will appear, and, who knows, even sufficient conversion to allow her to run in umber (as discussed above - new cab, dome cover, chimney required).

(Compare below. The Southern Railway cut down the cabs, chimneys and domes to reduce the height to fit the new SR composite loading gauge:

I'm all for BR black:rolleyes: [takes tin helmet, flak jacket and hides behind sofa] No, but seriously, I'm dying to see it run as it is one of my favourites and I never got to see one in the 50's. Any colour will do.

I can with all authority tell you that it will be Bluebell blue as the P tank 'Bluebell'. Full lining to boot. Worksplate will show constructed at Bluebell Railway.

Well, I can imagine worse colour schemes:)

Despite my usual preference for pre-grouping liveries, I reckon it doesn't make much sense to paint her in umber until such a time as there are suitable LBSCR-liveried coaches for her to run with. Besides, the important thing is to get her running - the paint can easily be changed later!

I'd never thought about that, but it makes perfect sense! We'll be seeing quite a lot of those off-beat plates soon! (I wonder what Tornado's says?)

I noticed (in a photo) one on 82045 and I am sure it said "Built 2011 Bridgnorth". Which raises an interesting question, for locomotives that have a gestation measured in years rather than months, about what year you consider them to be "built". I'd have thought the year the engine first turned a wheel, but the 82045 people at least seem to have chosen (presumably) the year in which the frames were erected.

Boston Lodge seems to have gone for the year of completion - see Lyd's works-plate - http://www.whrsoc.org.uk/WHRProject/2010/SuperPower2010/AT-TransferforSuperpower-10092010-3.jpg, and that is on a construction that took over a decade to complete
