That was what I was fearing - imagine ant attempt to discuss the relative merits of signal box kettles?!?!;)

For your information I was responding to several adverse comments about the term being used. I will say no more than that. Seems I'm between rock etc......

    Meanwhile, back at the plot:

Anyone able to furnish equivalent numbers to those JimC and I have provided for GWR / SR locos, but for LMS, LNER, Austerities and BR Standards?

And upset a lot of people in the process, making their posts look stupid & said posters look thick. Not to mention it affected other threads as well.

There are a number of words of intermediate length between the two in question which are doubtless in common use within the movement which nevertheless would be considered inappropriate for common use in the forum...
Sysadmins are humans like everyone else, and may have sensitivities about things which superficially seem fairly harmless but which have caused them much grief in the past. Its good manners to respect such feelings even if you don't agree, just as its considered good manners to refrain from the sort of adjectives one might use when discovering that a set of bearings are no longer in the condition they were when you installed them not very long ago. Otherwise, well... Do you fancy a minimum 20 character password which has to be changed every three days with no duplicated letters and no reuse of old passwords permitted?

Sorry, I was referring to three specific words - my post had absolutely nothing to do with the adjectives to which you refer, and which to my knowledge have never been used on this forum - or am I missing something ?

In good company it is also considered 'good manners' to respect the views and feelings of posters. I think I have made my points on this matter in an extremely polite and well meaning spirit ! Please take the trouble to point out to me where this has not been the case.

In the railway engineering game a set of bearings that show signs of distress are not uncommon, although what they have to do with this topic is a little obscure.

I am not sure I understand your rather abstract view concerning signing in - what is your point, or is it just something that you find amusing ?

I'm sorry if I was unclear, but I mustn't take the thread any further off track.

But it's all back to normal now, so perhaps you could move on as they say...

That was it - must have read in the BRC stock book or been told during a shed tour there. Thanks.

Since a fireless loco does not have a boiler, just a pressure vessel, it must be cheaper to maintain and probably to insure too. There’s the answer for the forward thinking railway – build one static power generating apparatus and run a whole fleet of fireless locos from it. Pop back to base every so often to top up. Problem solved, simples!

Oh hang on a minute. A static power generating apparatus. That’s what the G-Wiz uses. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Perhaps you could build a long pipe to transfer the steam from the power generating apparatus to the locomotive. Although it would easier to generate a vacuum and use that to provide the propulsive power. An ‘atmospheric railway’, now there’s an idea. Let me put my stovepipe thinking hat on...

    Would never work.

You'd need the rails to be further apart to accommodate the pipe.

No, we could use microbore pipe. You see, I'm thinking outside the diesel here...

Why should we Ralph? You have played the "rock and hard place"card before. It appears to me that you allowed your professional judgement as a Moderator to be clouded by personal emotion, and breached your own Conditions of Use as well as adversely affecting a number of innocent and well-meaning posters contributions. We all make mistakes. Sorry is not always the hardest word, and I suggest you would look a bigger man, worthy of the respect of all contributors here, if you used it this time. The only decent alternative would be to "consider your position".

A bit melodramatic, no? I thought it was a funny response to a bit of a non-issue…

How far could one of those small 0-6-0 fireless locos that are rpeserved go on one charge?

Lets assume, a 90 tonne three carriage train and a two mile run, how many could it do between re-charges?

I find it fascinating (far more so than arguing about boxes and kettles)

Sorry to disagree but it made other people including myself look fools. Making us out to look totally thick & illiterate.
    Including totally unrelated threads.
Don't forget, Ralph is quick enough to pick up on other peoples misdemeanors.

No need to apologise, I just think you're over-reacting. It's not as though it actually lasted very long, is it…?

That said, I do recognise the concerns about being made to look illiterate…

Christ, who cares that Ralph changed the spell-checker/dictionary. Do we have nothing else to worry about or has Nat-Pres politics/ethics taken over some people's lives?
