we have an LMS 8p sitting in a shed in excellent condition, waiting for a spanner, that could & has already turn a wheel and run around the country in preservation..

all it needs is time, skills and money.

Why look at 46235, when 46203 has been waiting for 20 odd years...
If it really has to be a Duchess, not a Princess, but some smoke deflectors on it.

What's wrong with steaming Hamilton again, BTW? Surely the NRM are more likely to let that out, even in streamlined form, than we are ever likely to see CoB again.

Not sure anyone said there was anything wrong with steaming Hamilton again did they ? If it was to happen however I think it would have to be in streamlined form to distinguish it from 46233. ADB's suggestion of reviving 46203 is a much better idea though in my opinion.

Agree with you about CoB though. Very unlikely to see her in steam ever again.

I'd be very happy to chip in to any "steam the bath tub" appeal. Who wouldn't want to witness a streamlined DoH at speed. Much bigger crowd puller than just another Duchess or Princess IMHO.

Agreed, cue Steam Railway and another of their successful appeals perhaps ? Guess we need NRM permission first ? Can feel a new thread coming on, :)

To the public, a steam engine is a steam engine, that is, until you factor in a little 'wow appeal'. Look at the A4 reunion, what happens when you get serious (non-financial) endorsement such as HRH with Tornado etc. etc. So a streamlined DoH would probably hit the buttons. That was easy to say but, and I wouldn't wish to imply there would be any parallel, our old friend FS also fits that category. Look at the torturous path that has taken to get anywhere near on the right track.

And Mike Notley's of Steam Railway and train timing fame if that adds any weight to it's case, :)

Might the streamlined duchess without smoke deflectors suffer from drifting smoke issues? Will someone have to model that in a wind tunnel to show otherwise?

Not to mention being saddled with a single chimney presumably ? Or am I wrong on that ?

How about a rake of Mark 2Ds in matching livery.. it'll look odd with mark 1s.. and as a luxury "train" it would be much more exclusive, marketable and profitable.even if it limits the behaviour of window hangers (but it neednt run with them every trip)

I read in a book that the casing caused low pressure on the leeward side and drew down the exhaust. One of the reasons for removing the casing.

I thought PMR was always likely to return when Sutherland is coming out of ticket ?,the gist being they would operate one or the other at one time, but not both.

Woulden't a slight modification around the exhaust solve that ? worked for the A4's.

Downside, though, is that the coaches would look odd running with any other engine! She wouldn't look too bad with maroon Mk 1s, IMHO, since BR maroon is so close to LMS maroon anyway.

Alternatively, turn her out in blue and silver and pair her blue and grey Mk 1s...!

They were converted to double chimneys early on following the trials with 'Duchess of Abercorn' around 1939.

Duchess of Abercorn was a non-streamlined member of the Class.

City of Birmingham is an old favorite of mine. Shame that it had to moved from the Museum of Science and Industry – at lease it did move there, even if it was only 10 feet every two hours. In regard to 6229 Duchess of Hamilton, I was ready wikipedia and it says at the bottom – "The locomotive is currently on display next to a 1933 Chrysler Airflow, with plans but no timescale to return her to steam in the future." Something to look forward to.
