Not sure Stuart thinks that far ahead. I think he's in 'La-la' land and just enjoys the dubious notoriety of inventing different fantasy new-builds. After all it's much more fun posting c..p on Farcebook than wrestling lumps of unco-operative iron in a cold and dirty engine shed. Ray.

The p&b boiler is not available so a member of the group that was selling it has told me

Any idea what is going to happen to this boiler then, anyone, another new build, or interchange with an existing loco? (no idea if it would fit any existing locos...)

Is there any basis for a even remotely viable dean goods if the boiler is unavailable?

If so, are there any other significant parts then?

And If not, will you have a go at another new build project?

If so, what? does it have any major parts in existence?

And, if not, please, please, go and help out in an existing new build or restoration, put this enthusiasm to use, rather than channelling it through useless paths such as this one (unless satisfactory answers can be provided to the above questions)

I await your answers to these questions Stuart, it may go a little way to establishing credibility, answer as many as you can, questions left unanswered will look the same as no.

I refer you to this post from earlier in the thread: http://www.national-preservation.co...ve-discussion-only-please.206112/#post-756772 - I assume you have spoken to Alex G regarding this?

It would also add a bit of credibility if you could answer the questions that have been asked by myself and others through this thread

I wish you boys would stop whinging and sniping about credibility: indeed stop whinging and sniping full stop. Nothing anyone can say on a forum will do anything to establish this credibility, and all these on line sessions are really doing is giving the impression of a bunch of small minded knockers who would be best steered well clear of.

The forum has given Stuart and those behind the project an opportunity to outline their plans . The P&B have stated that the boiler may yet be available and all Stuart had to do was get in touch with the P&B to establish contact . Stuart seems to chose an earlier conversation with someone who may or may not be connected that it isn't and so far I've not seen anything that convinces me there is a plan

Some of the posts are a little close to the mark and please can we not snipe at individuals or the project at what become a personal level . we all have dream projects , however the warning is that dreaming on a social media site exposes you to the risk of ridicule unless you have a reasonable engaging plan

For those who believe the forum is unfair I tend to find it a reasonable barometer of a scheme . The Patriot and LNWR George V projects have been well received , the J39,L1, L1 earlier incarnations exposed as projects with much less chance of success . as an aside the LNWR George V latest news is here and shows a scheme with purpose making steps forward http://blog.lnwrgeorgevtrust.org.uk/

I think many of us are just frustrated that all this enthusiasm is wasted, where it could have so much use elsewhere on the preservation scene.
If we just let them carry on, they will waste their time and possibly money and possibly others where it could be better distributed.

i still hold to the opinion that if 2516 is examined carefully it will be found to be in excellent condition, and once 'extracted' will not require much work to return it to operable condition.
how on earth it is extracted or was allowed to be put in such a position in the first place is quite another matter!
    cheers,
    julian

On another question, why is 2516 considered so difficult to extract from the museum? As I recall (been a little while since I visited), she is in the same hall as one or two other engines; the museum has swapped other locos recently (for example, didn't Evening Star come for a while?) So what makes it possible to bring in Lode Star, Evening Star etc at presumably reasonable cost, yet everyone seems to say that the design of the building prevents 2516 ever being extracted without undergoing great cost.

Does anyone have a floor plan to show what the difficulty is?

    Tom

    hi flying scotsman123,
there is quite a lot of evidence to suggest that Swindon did far more than just a cosmetic job when preparing LODE STAR and the Dean Goods 2516 for the old swindon museum. ive a few photos of the work in progress on 2516 and it was by all accounts quite a thorough job. i wouldnt have expected anything less during the Reggie Hank's era!
    cheers,
    julian

Having watched the 'Monster Moves' programme about extracting & (temporarily) repatriating the A4s, particularly 60008, what is the difficulty extracting 2516?

The other locos are/were on a road between 2 platforms. See photo of Evening Star taken in 2010 http://paulsimpson.zenfolio.com/p909623643/h22ddc337#h20d3c692There is a door in the distance which I suspect they came in through.
The Dean Goods is to the left of Evening Star (from memory and a basic plan in the leaflet I have) on a seperate section of track see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dean_Goods_2_db.jpg .

Not sure whether to take that as a compliment - age is wisdom etc.

Ahh well, I've had a year's volunteering experience, I might as well be as old as the hills :D

I haven't a floor plan but as mentioned in post #75, 2516 is separate from where Lode Star etc. is exhibited. It is on a piece of unconnected track at quite an angle to the track used for Lode Star and Ditcheat Manor (I think the latter is still there?). If you look at http://locoyard.files.wordpress.com...wr-swindon-gwr-2301-dean-goods-class-2516.jpg you can see the Manor in the background. You will also note a pillar that may or may not be an added headache.

Of course nothing is impossible but 2516 ain't going nowhere soon.
