Therein lies a clue! Hands up those who ALWAYS tighten a screw coupling when shunting? Unlike 3 link couplings, a screw coupling can act as a strut, especially if not well lubricated, and can ride up the back of a coupling when being propelled and stay in that position. That is why standard RCH couplings are provided with over-riders. GWR ones, along with quite a few industrials, aren't. Some pre-grouping ones are similar but most have now been replaced with the RCH type.

Usually on a recently overhauled loco where the coupling has been smothered in paint

Is there a date for Dinmore to arrive at the GWSR yet, and will it be complete apart from painting, or will there still be bits to put on once it arrives?

Also do you know when 2874 will be arriving, as I notice it has been delayed due to traffic reasons (as always it seems with these things).

    Alex,

Thank you for the interest shown.

We are awaiting a revised date for 2874's move to the GWSR, unfortunately a mechanical issue with the low loader prevented the move planned for earlier in the month. When we have confirmation I shall drop you a note and let you know.

We are working 2-3 days a week now alongside Tyseley Locomotive Works staff to complete 7820 as soon as possible, delivery during February ready for painting is the aim, with the boiler only just re-united with the frames we need to monitor progress over the coming weeks and then hopefully we shall be able to paint a much clearer picture by the middle of January.

Sorry I can't be more specific than that at this stage.

    Regards,

    Mike Solloway

No that's fine, better than some answers that people give - "it'll be ready when it's finished" etc. I look forward to seeing you in February then (I'm at Winchcombe)

After a bit of a last minute change of plans we are delighted to announce that when 7820 ‘Dinmore Manor’ emerges from the conclusion of her heavy overhaul she will be unveiled in a British Railways un-lined black livery featuring the large early emblem on her tender. The name and number plates will be different, black background on one side, red on the other to reflect the fact that red backed plates had started to be discontinued by the time liveries changed from lined to un-lined black.

This will be the first time this livery has been seen on a Manor since approximately 1959 and will be for a limited period whilst the tender being hired from Andy Booth/3855 is being used, once we complete our own tender over the course of 2014 she will revert to British Railways lined green livery to keep painting costs to a minimum.

The new livery also fits in with the theme of the recently announced Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Gala ‘Black is Back’ set to be held over the weekend of the 24-26th of May. Unveiling of 7820 in her new livery is expected to be during March on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

"This will help to keep painting costs to a minimum as the hired tender is already black."

surely it would be cheaper to paint the tender than the loco?

seems a bit daft to me!

    cheers,
    julian

Makes perfect sense to me Julian.

    1. Cash in on a livery that hasn't been seen for 55 years with the paparazzi
    2. No lining required so it keeps the cost down of the initial finished paint job on the loco
    3. It's an ideal paint job for a newly overhauled loco as it can be patched up should any tweaks need to be made (ala the Ffestiniog)
    4. It keeps the owner of the tender happy as the work already completed on this tender wasn't in vain (i.e. no additional work to that already completed)
    5. It means DMLL don't have to splash out for 2 repaints of the tender (1 in the near future and 1 one when the tender is returned to the owner)
    6. It means a bit more publicity in 12-24 months time when Dinmore gets a repaint.
    7. As Dinmore should be run in nicely by the time the repaint takes place it should mean that the more ornate lined green livery is less susceptible to damage following light repairs/adjustments.

Add to this the fact that we have 3 other Manor's in lined green (albeit Foxcote having been withdrawn recently for repairs) makes it a very sensible choice in my eyes.

    Mike

Now an idea that I've thought about for quite some time now, how about having the identities of a few of the lost members of the class produced and the identity changed for a set number of months for each number? Would potentially encourage people to visit more often if they wanted to see all the guises. It would also potentially increase the number of possible photoshoots. I'm sure the latter would cover the costs to produce the name and number plates. You could also potentially auction off the plates once worn to generate additional cash? I'm thinking half a dozen identities that could be worn during both the BR black and green phases, and potentially others in the longer term. It could also encourage additional steaming days should the change of identity choose popular with the punters? This is all based on the idea that the external identity of a WR loco is relatively simple to change with all plates being removable, please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

    Anyway, food for thought!

    Kind Regards

    Paul

The papparazi have already filled three days of charters at the GWSR even before the livery was known , following on from the now postponed week at the Gwili

    Hi Julian,

I have been misquoted/understood there slightly, the release I sent out is as per post 27, the tender is arriving with us in undercoat.

However, with professional painting and lining costs for a loco and tender being north of £5000 and with time running out on our part to be available for the running season a more simple livery option was required, we can't afford to be sat in a shed for a fortnight being painted whilst the GWSR need the engine available for traffic and thus earning money. Secondly if we painted the loco green now, roll forward 12 months when we come to pair her with our own tender and there would be a noticeable difference in shade.

    Paul,

Many thanks for your thoughts, we wouldn't be averse to an identity swap, such ideas have been mooted in the past, the unfortunate stumbling block is often the £3000+ required to purchase a complete set of 'proper' cabside number and name plates. If a willing sponsor came forward, or a guaranteed purchaser/s for the plates is found once they have been worn by the engine coupled with a bit of additional income from a photo charter or two if there was the sufficient interest then....... Any offers?!

Very nice too. Well done all at DMLL she looks excellent and it's always nice to see a slightly different and historically accurate livery. I wonder if there might be a chance of seeing her with the more common, but rarely seen in preservation, black background to name and numberplates. Definitely a reason to go to Toddington in the coming months.

Isn't that colour numberplate supposed to be on the other side? I think it was going to be different...
