so I am right in thinking so far.. making a rebuilt WC/BB appear as a backdated unrebuilt WC/BB hasn't yet been done then…?

Imagining the fun that's going to ensue for our descendants when Neil Dimmer's grandson posts a selection of random early 21st century images, and the name and number carried by the locomotives won't be a reliable guide to identity?

WSR double headed 2 class 14 diesels both as D9526 (on one side at least), one should have been D9520 at a gala a few years ago.

Certainly 34105 "Swanage" ran for a short period as 34067 "Tangmere" on the Mid Hants. If I remember correctly "Tangmere" appeared oneApril 1st! I recall the surprise at seeing an unfamiliar blue nameplate through the trees at the bottom of my garden. Whilst "Swanage" will make a return to MHR service in a few years, in the light of more recent events,"Tangmere" is unlikely to be seen at Ropley anytime soon!!

"Blackmore Vale" has run renamed as "OVS Bulleid", originally on the anniversary of his birthday in 2003, and then in subsequent years at the same time of year. Interestingly, that was not a first: the works' manager at Eastleigh added temporary wooden "OV Bulleid" nameplates to 34023 back in BR days, though I don't think she ever ran in that form.

So which one did it carry on the smoke box? as this would mean the loco is more of one identity that the other rather than a complete 50-50 split...

    Tom,
The renaming at Eastleigh you refer to was organised by John Click, this was done without any permission and it was sheer chance that 34023 was the chosen locomotive!
34023 as she was then, never ran with these nameplates. When 21C123 returns to traffic the ritual will continue.

It ran with the 340 from 22 and the 45 from 45. Fairest way to split it they reckoned. :)

    Hello Tom,
Yes, I have seen a black and white print many years ago, I am not sure if there is one in the Bulleid Society archives, if not perhaps its with the John Click
    collection at the NRM.
    Roger.

The picture of 34023 with the wooden O.V. Bulleid plate is in 'The Power of the Bulleid Pacifics' (1983), plate 171. The plate 21C123 now carries has the extra initial 'S' – O.V.S Bulleid.
