No wind up - honest Guv !! - but "de" is defined as a prefix in the Oxford English Dictionary [OED] and is therefore able to be put in front of any verb to show the reversal of meaning as in classify / declassify; regulate / deregulate; furbish / refurbish. Such constructs also allow for the "creation" of the appropriate nouns as in declassification; deregulation; refurbishment and show the flexibility of the English Language.

Note also that many industries also "create" words which pass into common parlance and gain admission to the OED and I can think of the recent example of "selfies" which has now entered the domain of common usage and its place in the next edition of the OED.

English is often claimed to be a "Living Language" and as such adapts to the modern idioms - including the creation of new words in the lexicon of life as we live it whether by creating, adapting or inventing new words to communicate with each other.

That's what forums are all about; start off with a subject, take a tangent then see where you end up; probably nowhere where you expected to be ! :)

But can you add two prefixes to the original word??? furbish, refurbish, unrefurbish??
Although on second thoughts it's only like unrebuilt which crops up on here referring to some Southern stuff......

I was going to ask if "furbish" was a word, but apparently it is: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/furbish

Which does beg the question why we need "refurbish" as furbish seems to means the same!

The Germans have no problem "bolting" lots of words together!

"Furbish" is the original fitment of the fittings and decor; "refurbish" is to repeat the process at some later date to either restore or upgrade the item to extend its life.

When you dismantle something, you're taking it apart. So it must have been mantled in the first place.

No, dismantling is removing the shelf over the fireplace.

You mean it's being migrated into a Star Class ?

Interesting it's the first time 5029 has been to the capital in years.

does that mean its' being disunreinfranchised with London ?

Redegenerating (we've degenerated before) technically as a moderator I could say unreunredegenerating (strangely my ipad sees this as a legit word...?)
