Dead right about the cost of getting to London and it does, sadly, illustrate the problem of not picking up in the suburbs - i.e. Woking. The daft thing is that on this path I reckon that a Woking pick up could possibly have been included and still provide a good dash to Salisbury. The other sad point is that £75 is still too much in my view to attract many last minute folk with the London issue even with the promise, possibly, of a quick run. I know that margins would be tight but £50 for standard might have tipped the balance.

It changed for summer 1964. So only for few months before steam ended on most trains on that route. As you probably recall it was the return working of the up Ace crew and loco. Salisbury men. :)

Thanks KentYeti -- I was in the 1962 area - & didn t realize it was Salisbury crew , but it was always a spirited run for sure . Didn t do timing im afraid , it was always great window hanging times. I lived in Romsey so in the am it was up to London via Southampton & return via Salisbury .

The ECS arrives at Waterloo at 09:37. A diesel movement is scheduled to run at 10:00
to Stewarts Lane so it appears that there will be no diesel banker for the tour. :) <BJ>

I see that as expected the timing is 74 min to Andover but overall the path is pretty good. You do have to contrast this with the SL and looping that takes place on the principal routes elsewhere. It'll probably be a case of sticking in the path and I presume that the Basingstoke Canal bridge slack will apply on the FL to slow things up around MP 31. For once perhaps we should be grateful that trains are not rushing around at 100/125 mph on the SWML as squeezing this path in might have been more difficult otherwise.

OH WOW! We have IC 125's on the SWML? I've missed them, I'll pop out today and video a few!

IC 125s used to work Crosscountry services from Bournemouth to Basingstoke. These services are now Voyagers, but these are also passed for 125mph, but perhaps not on the SWML!

No, Bryan - "wrong type of engine", especially when it's got a 71B plate on the smokebox door! ;)

71B? Isn't that an LMS shed code? I don't recall any Southern locos having shed codes in that format? ;)

    Confused of Salisbury…

    71B was a Bournemouth engine I think.

........and everyone's worried that it might turn up with a Bournemouth driver. Bryan will tell you why that's a problem! It's not for nothing that the master engineman Jim Evans escaped to London as soon as possible!

By the way, as it's Christmas, perhaps we should thank SWT for allowing their 1000 service to Portsmouth to be retimed all the way down to Petersfield (i.e. slowed down) so that it doesn't cause problems. Now would that happen on the WCML or ECML?

This trip is now reported to be fully booked according to the UK Railtours website but it also says call for late availability.

Maybe that means they've managed to fill whatever length of train can fit into platform 16 plus the diesel. Does anyone know the platform lengths at Waterloo? I can't find them in the sectional appendix which is odd....

My pdf of the SA, pages 120 and 121, shows platform lengths of 9 to 19 as 12 cars of class 377.

My apologies; this info relates to Victoria, not Waterloo.
Thanks to 'Deepgreen' for bringing this to my attention.

Good news! In that case, UK Railtours should at least break even and maybe even make a small profit. Let's hope DBS do a good job, to start rebuilding their reputation amongst the steam business.

Agreed. To NR, DBS is an important partner that does valuable work for them. The issues that existed over steam charters had nothing to do with the enginemen who are, in my view, as good as the best. And more to the point, with regular customers like the MNLPS, there are arrangements in place for maintaining and developing expertise. All of that feels pretty secure to me. I know that it probably isn't any different wherever you go but our heritage fleet does need TLC on the footplate as well as off it and another player in the market doing just that is no bad thing.
