    From National Rail website:-

A broken down train near Parkstone is causing delays of up to 40 minutes to trains between Weymouth and Bournemouth. These delays are expected to continue until approximately 10:00.
In addition to the above, trains travelling towards Bournemouth from Weymouth, are unable to call at Poole, Parkstone and Branksome.
Buses are running between Poole and Bournemouth calling at Poole, Parkstone, Branksome and Bournemouth

From a reliable source, she stalled, 33 came to the rescue and now on the move again...

It seems that someone thought it a good idea to take on Parkstone bank without DL assistance. Class 5 plus 10, (I guess), on a damp 1 in 60. An interesting decision.....but faith in Riley's 5s remains intact!

    Too much obviously…..

Why try and be a hero? Should have left the 33 on the back right from the start. Hopeless.

NR will view this as the wrong call by West Coast, I am afraid. That could be embarrassing. What happened to the residual memory of what size of loco took what load up the bank in the sixties.

AGAIN How many times does WCR have to cock up on this section under exactly the same circumstances before they get the hint?

Don't need to be, one simply has to look back at the lessons of recent history.

    Both.
    It's uphill.
    It's damp.
There are still big issues with railhead condition.
Biggish train for one smallish loco.
    Leave the diesel behind.

Yeah, it was always going to work out right wasn't it? Or does the need to prove how magnificent single Black Fives are at hill climbing ( fail) over ride the need to stick to your booked timings and not disrupt the service (again)?

Yeah, we all know that the originally rostered Tangmere has tried it under the same circumstances with the same results.

An outspoken comment but basically correct. Sorry to labour the point but a Class 8 Pacific (Clan Line) with a hot fire, starting out of Poole with 11 on in July 2012 made Parkstone bank look simple - 32 mph min. But the same load with only a Class 5, in November and with a cold fire is a different kettle of fish entirely. It doesn't matter how experienced the crew is, the (applied) maths just doesn't add up if you want to guarantee success. And this is not the case of an armchair critic being wise after the event. As has been said, there is past (recent) experience to draw on. Sorry, West Coast - off to the naughty corner for you.

Sorry, that doesn't hold any water with me.

    Up against that wall please.

    Do you want a blindfold?

Well, we don't know the full facts yet Al.

But on the basis of what is being presumed at present your post makes a great deal of sense.

Edit. Somehow posted this having missed the whole of the last page here. So if the sources are correct then Al's post is indeed a good one.

Strewth, don't let me ever get near deciding what motive power should do what: I can't even see a full page of typed posts right in front of me.

Is now a good time to ask if we should have boxes on the back of tours such as this.
