Thanks for the heads up fellas.
Assuming fire risk is now minimal could the 47 be insurance if there is a slight concern with the steam?

Right time away from Preston, steam doing all the work being heard well into the distance. Not sure if the 47 was even idling.

Is this the train a Nat Pres contributor has paid extra to be in the Observation car at the back? Where the diesel now is?

The diesel was behind the steam at the front. The obbo car was the rearmost vehicle leaving Preston so the view was ok northbound.

    Doooooh.

Which part of "45231 with 47580 coupled behind" didn't I understand?

OMG. Some days I really am as thick as sh.t.

One the return, there will probably be a support coach between 47 and Obbo, which will help.

You're too hard on yourself! The wording was ambiguous - I wasn't clear whether it meant behind 45231 or behind the train. "Tucked in behind" or "coupled inside" are better as they leave no room for doubt.

I think the post right after mine was a give away but I would have said that 47580 was on the rear if that was the case if I am honest . Was not trying to confuse folk just let them know what the formation was .

Just found this on YT which will nicely clear up any confusion, plus it's good to see 45231 doing what seems most if not all of the work. Looking good for my trip on next weeks Fellsman :)

Since the fire risk still seems to be marginal, I can understand why today's train had diesel assistance. A Black 5 has to work pretty hard, pretty continuously to lift 12 coaches over the S&C. I would hope that next week's train will be a different case. 45699 & 46115 ought to be able to keep time without either of them working particularly hard. It's timed for the 50mph 8F, after all. (Assuming 45699 is fit again, after whatever it was that stopped her working the SSE last week...)

A short selection of shots of 45231 just after the Preston stop, at Horrocksford, near Nappa (by the main road) and approaching Settle:

Brief video of 45231 at Birkitt but due to a comedy of errors not my best ever production .

Not too much time Henry. Just using Nat Pres for much needed breaks from my continuing analysis of Short-Eared Owl ringing data for my book on those lovely creatures.

I can manage about 4 records, (ringed and recovered) at a time, then my brain hurts! So I call into Nat Pres for some light relief. :)

And I've got rather a lot still to do.

But the data I am getting looks like it will all be worthwhile. In the end!

Like the Owl that migrated from Finland, as quite a few do to England. Only this one ignored all the low lying over-wintering areas in England and ended up in the extreme South West of Ireland.

Hey little'un, why did you do that? LOL.
