    At the end of the end of the day, the NYMR's S160 is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for it, but it's not unreasonable for them to ask more than scrap value for it - you couldn't walk into the average scrapyard and leave with the bits for a complete loco, there is an intrinsic value to the assembled parts that command a premium, though it remains to be seen what the market believes that to be. Whilst it is probably true that it is possible to buy a working engine in Poland for X amount, the NYMR's experience was that the fitters in Poland felt was a working engine fell far short of UK expectations, and on top of the purchase price there is also the question of transport and import duties.

    Are there any s160's in Poland, or anywhere that would cost less than the NYMR example? then in what state, there were some dumped in Greece several years ago, but expect these would have gone by now, and would need a lot of work in any case, there are others in this country that were inported and stripped , didnt riley at one stage own 3 ? theres the one at portland , will that be for sale at some point ? i wonder what an S160 would sound like up tenerden bank , could we borrow the CVR one to play with?

    I think I'm right in saying that the Riley trio are all now at Ruddington. However as the GCR(N) website lists only one, and as all three were basically kits of parts, I'd hazard a guess that the other two are being used as sources of spares.

    I'm surprised that S160's are not more popular on the Uk's preserved railways . Relatively simple , bags of power , Fabulous whistle , plently of water capacity , Thomas character as well (I think) and also relatively affordable not having the cachet of a BR heritage

    It is an interesting observation of railway enthusiasts that they can be quite tribal with very strong affiliations to a railway company or era to the exclusion of others

    I'm amazed that a line like the Mid Norfolk, Weardale or Wensleydale hasn't picked up 2253. There's a Mid Norfolk group restoring an Austerity and the Weardale has RSH No. 40 (which seems to have been something of a money pit) - one would have thought that the S160 would have been a better bet in either case.

    It is odd, especially as it has British pedigree, if someone painted it BR 1950's with the number 93253, people may think differently, afterall they ran all over Europe until the 1980's, it was only lack of Britishness, that curtailed its wartime career here.

    Maybe relatively affordable to buy, but as far as restoration back to working order is concerned, they aren't going to be any cheaper than any similarly sized loco, but I'd expect a sight more difficult to enthuse people into digging into wallets. So I expect it's a simple equation of being just as expensive to restore as anything else, but much less desirable to build a fundraising campaign around. Even though it is of SR origin and something of a foreigner "oop north", I'd imagine the fundraising people at the NYMR are more confident that they can raise the money to restore the S15 in a reasonable period of time than the money needed for the S160.

    Parochial? Maybe, but no loco (to my knowledge) can be restored any more from running fees alone - they all need external fundrasing support, so the easier that is to engender, the more attractive they are.

    The S160 would be better than nothing or something unsuitable, though. In the case of the Weardale, just right for their "Polar Express" events too, if you don't mind the creeping americanisation of Christmas!

    Just a value update. At todays scrap price as s160 is worth roughly £17300.

    There are parts from 3 different S160s at Ruddington, however when put together there's only enough for one complete loco and a substantial quantity of spares, but not quite enough to make a second, crucially there's only one tender. Seeing as the greatest proportion of the parts, including the Superheated Boiler, the best quality frames, tender and driving wheels come from 1631, if Ruddington were to steam an S160 it is highly probably that it would assume that identity. That's probably why it's the only one listed on the website

    How were they accumulated? Were they bought as 3 bags of parts or did they start off as 3 locos and bits got lost/sold/scrapped over the years?

    But consider the scrapman would have to cart it away and cut it up, so would probably offer less. The published price of scrap is for material ready for the melting pot. Reducing a large loco to furnace sized pieces is quite a job

    To the best of my knowledge they're all owned by the same bloke. So I guess he just bought them...?

    I believe they were all ex Hungarian Railways (MAV) , latterly as stationary boilers. IIRC one of them (boiler, frame and maybe tender) were in Derek Foster's yard in Kirkby when he was rebuilding 76079 - I think that one was Ian Riley's. Soon after Steamport moved to Preston the parts of the other two were bought by a couple of members and stored at Ribby for some years. Sorry it's a bit vague. Ray.

    I used to visit regularly when I worked just around the corner and I can remember seeing a set of S160 frames with an axle missing and smashed cylinder covers (looked like it had suffered a big water carry over)
