You won't get a 30's or 40's express lineup using what's current at York, you seem to be overlooking 6000 is in BR livery and not really "repaintable" with the double chimney/4 row superheaters, could fetch 4003 or 4073 from Swindon, but a lot of expense just for a static lineup.

in any case, 34051 is there as it hauled the funeral train of WC and it was in BR livery then.

Quite. BR livery enables the loco to represent the working for which it is most noted; malachite doesn't represent this, nor as a 1946-built loco does it tell any wartime story. It is of its greatest value to the collection in the livery it is currently.

Which is, of course, something that we never do in UK preservation!

so the advocates of yet another BR green because of "history", I assume are objecting also to other locomotives not masquerading as their "claim to fame" appearences...including 4472 going back to LNER green, 6229 being restored as 6220 with bell

Paint doesnt equal history on it's own.. as 21C151 the locomotive was snubbed by it's namesake who refused to name the locomotive.. hardly an indication he wanted to be associated to it and another piece of it's history.

this loco was in SR livery for just over a year..it's claim to fame and it's mass appeal to the Public is that it hauled the Great Man's funeral train. Whatever is done with other locos isn't relevant.

True, but the NRM are not exactly awash with cash currently are they ?, money better spent elsewhere that wheeling loco's round the country just for the sake of a lineup, it's not like the required loco's will be unavailable in future when the finances are a bit healthier.

Again a fair point, but I suspect the A4 deal was done before it was realised what an expensive problem child 4472 would be.

Anyway we're wandering a bit from 34051, while it's true she wore Malachite for a very short period, apart from Blackmoor Vale, are there any surviving & restored Spam Cans that wore it longer ?, Tangmere, Manston, 257 Squadron, City of Wells & Swanage were outshopped later, but could of been repainted later too.

I think Tangmere and Manston appeared as 21C167 and 21C170 but I think its just those two along with Wadebridge, Blackmoor Vale and Winston Churchill who appeared in Southern liviery.

I'd say keep 34051 in BR liviery as thats the condition she hauled the Funeral Train in (and the cosmetic restoration is being done for the 50th Anniversary of that event) and how she was withdrawn for preservation. On the other hand it'd be nice to see a Battle of Britain in Southern Malachite although wouldn't that mean that a new tender tank would have to be constructed.

The Friends of the NRM approached us to suggest they'd fundraise for 34051 and they continue to do so.

We have spec'd up the work to be done and costed it out. There is a small shortfall. I wouldn't expect work to start until the full amount is raised.

Wadebridge? She's the oldest of the survivors, isn't she?

I think you missed the point, 34051, 6000, 6229 and 4468 already live at York... No road transport required. (Well not until it moved to the MHR for its gala last September, not sure where it is now).

I have not yet seen an answer to Peter's question. Is this appeal still live?
