Q1 restoration

    I read in Sream Railway that the NRM had offerred the Q1 to the mid hants if they carried out the restoration.

    Yes and it was declined because they have enough projects as it is, but in the future i wouldn't bet against 33001 heading south, Once the JB engine saga has settled and these engines have moved away, been sold or new agreements agreed for them, there might be more room at ropley or who knows could it be the next resto at Eastleigh job, after 35005? depending of course on what it would cost and how the money could be raised to pay for it, Be a good addition to the motive power dept, a charlie on the freight storming Medstead bank , lineside photos woulds be wetting himself

    We assume that the offer was only made to the mid hants as there may be a list of railways that would be after a loco like this that should be in reasonable condition as been stored inside not left out in the wet and rain to rust.

    The Mid Hants don't have a lot of undercover accommodation for locos and with two locos from the National collection there there is surely a case for spreading them round a bit. It would be good to see it at Swanage or perhaps even Tunbridge Wells.

    I would assume that because the MHR have been very good custodians of NRM locos ie 120, 850 ,and now 925, they are viewed by York as being prefered options for future loans, The bulleid society were custodians of 33001 when she was at the bluebell, But i imagine they dont have the workshop space , or could raise the necessary funds to put 33001 back into steam because i would imagine they would have been asked first. unless york only wants a select number of railways as bases for its non mainline working engines.

    The funds require all depend on the condition of the loco i assume its was only stopped when its boiler cert ran out so this is not going to be an overly expensive job as if restoring from barry condition.
    I though the NRM had a group of select railways which to run its none mainline locos on including the great central i though there would be a large amount of interest in taking the Q1 as it tick most of the boxes for a preserved railway not to be easy to maintain as a standard is and will have no problem with service trains on any line except the NYMR ?

    I thought the article said the opposite? That is, there has been rumours on an Internet forum (I wonder which one? :smile:) but actually no discussions had taken place!

    So we have created a new thread and are speculating anew about a move that has already been said not to have been discussed!

    This was talked about on the MHR thread a few weeks ago. Which Martin Butler start on post number 1372. So why has this been given another thread for?

    I would think if the MHR were to overhaul 33001 it would be a long way off from being overhaul. Just look what is being worked on now.

    Also 30828 being overhauled by the ERPS boys, and at some stage in the future 34058, especially if 34016 leaves the line in 2014.

    As well as this being 'news' to Anthony Coulls, C1 is safe, warm, dry and fit for public display, if not operation. There are plenty others out there not so fortunate on some of those counts but requiring funding to get them completed. In a period of recession, resources are better concentrated where they are really needed, rather than where SR et al wouls like them to be.

    Yes, though the irony is that in this case, SR actually got it right. Their report (as I recall) effectively said "there have been rumours on an internet forum that C1 is moving to the MHR for restoration, but in fact no formal talks between the MHR and the NRM have taken place".

    So let's just recap the chronology here:

    - Someone speculates (in the MHR overhauls thread) that the NRM has offered the Q1 to the MHR

    - SR magazine reports on the speculation, but correctly points out that it is just that - speculation, and no formal talks have taken place

    - On the back of a misreading of the SR report, another thread about the Q1 starts speculating that she is due to move to the MHR

    - A senior figure in the NRM professes that such a move is news to me".

    And with all that, the thread is up and running with a life of its own and sailing under a fair breeze!

    Don't we all have railways to go and operate?
