Yes such as water cannon or sandite to keep the rails clear of autumnal muck that causes traction problems.

    Yep, thats the one!

Would anyone happpen to know what the gradients are on that section of line from Whalley to Ramgreave? I have had a quick look around the net but haven't come up with anything. On the train from 1 in 50 to 1 in 75 were mentioned but people seemed unsure.

    Thanks, Neil

Many thanks - we had thought the real action for the day was over and it was touch and go whether the battery would last, but fortunately it did.

Many thanks for the positive words they are very much appreciated.
I think we will all agree we will not forget Lizzies last run over the Northern Hills in a rush.

I've just had some information from a retired driver who used to work freight on the Clitheroe-Blackburn route some 25+ years ago. that section of line was notoriously bad even then, and the 37s he drove were often in trouble at this time of the year. So it seems that nothing changes...

Nice to see Lizzie in such good form, pity the conditions conspired against her, but with a little help from all concerned, she came out on top!

I was once able to watch a 'crab' work over there in appalling conditions with a freight, chuf chuf slip, chuf chuf slip slip, took ages but they got to the top. marvellous.

Without doubt outstanding driving by Mr Hodgson, but perhaps a word for the fireman too? Aswell as dealing with those difficult conditions, nearly all footage I've seen of Lizzie on the day shows her safety valves feathering most of the time... impressed me anyway!

It's a team effort. no one will deny that. Listening to that video, at 3.00 mins and after it was several minutes of skilled control with the loco constantly at the limit of adhesion. Enginemen as masters of their craft!

Some good stuff here guys and certainly an eventful trip.

Watching the rain come down from the video taken from Ramsgreave & Wilpshire station (Post #54) shows how bad it was so credit to the footplate and support crew's respectively!

Question, will the chap filming from Lizzie's footplate on the climb up Shap be putting his footage on YouTube? I hope so!
