All aboard the Lynton & Barnstaple

Great news, let's hope it all goes through.

 

Just to change the subject a little, i came across this image whilst looking on the net, it came from an Turkish museum and it made me think straight away of the L&B.

Don't supposeanyof the prototypes survive? One of them would be a great repatriation project for the L & B!

 

I think they do, i'm sure i've come across this type in meanderings around the net, South America springs to mind, possibly sugar fields in Mexico, not sure though.

 

This seems to be getting very confused. The loco. pictured was shown in a Bagnall catalogue as being built for the Cape. Whether or not it was to a Bagnall design I don't know but it is unlikely to be a design by Mannings. The latter company built the L&B machines of course but they built very few sub 3ft. gauge products and Fred. W. Harman's reference work on MW does not show anything resembling this.

No confusion, just intresting. Well, thanks for the information. Be a shame though if one of these is hanging around in some forgotten field in the middle of nowhere, i'm sure we could give it a good home !!

 

The loco was built for the Walmer branch of the Avontuur line in South Africa by Bagnalls. There where two of them both scrapped when the branch closed due to road competition.

Shame they didn't survive.

This year there is an exhibition within an exhibition which will feature all things Lynton and Barnstaple Railway.

The exhibition will feature the full size replica Lyd, from the Festiniog Railway. L&B artefacts and nine L&B layouts in a variety of scales. There will also be an exhibition of past, current and forthcoming L&B models in a display case loaned by Accucraft UK

 

Woohoo! "L & B World" here we come! Full marks to all concerned for arranging this stand, can't wait to see 'Lyd' there as well.

Some good news from North Devon - the recent appeal for funding has resulting in the securing of another 1200 yards of former L&B trackbed, from Rowley Cross towards Parracombe - (see the L&B Website) - and there is more to come!

 

Excellent news! Would be handy if there was a map to show what was in L&B/EA ownership.

Only 20% of the Phase 2 track-bed though, long way to go!

no, the figure is 30% acquired, negotiations ongoing for another 20%. Assuming the L&B's TWOA has compulsory purchase powers that means the remainder will be obtainable. Also, there are stretches outwith Phase 2 that the L&B or Exmoor Associates own.

The EA map hasn't yet been updated with the latest few acquisitions. The L&B website is due for an upgrade within the next few weeks. That'd be great Martyn, a visual cue as to how things are progressing and what's to come would be excellent.

I'd be suprised if you were able to cumpulsory purchase for the remaining 50%, local authorities are always very reluctent to use these powers as it's rarely popular to force people to sell their property!

 

All we would be able to show is the land we (Trust, CIC, EA) actually own already, or that is publicly owned (NDCC, for example, owned Rowley Cross until they gifted it to the L&B last year, and I understand even Somerset CC own some of the L&B!) but for obvious reasons, couldn't show land that we are negotiating for.

I'm not speaking officially for the L&B, but as I understand it, we could apply for the TWAO either with or without compulsory powers, and if without, apply for CP once statuory powers are confirmed, but the intention is, as you say, to avoid any compulsion if at all possible. This way will no doubt take longer, and may cost more, but in the long run, will give an overall more satisfactory result for the L&B and for North Devon.

 

I agree Martyn. Besides, the risk of a CPO might bring land owners to the negociating table regardless, as the negociations would be more favourable.

As to my previous comment, I meant that we could see what land was still outside of ownership, rather then what land was under negociation, as that is obviously sensative information.
