So this has turned into a one million pound project. Gutted. I really wanted to see this steam. Maybe it will happen but it's going to need someone with deep pockets or a group with a fantastic fundraising team.

Well as long as nothing else disappears- there are groups who exist with the appropriate expertise in the areas of fundraising and engineering. Deep pockets only pop up now and again...

Woah, that sounds terrible. Not doubting anyone's good faith here, but is that definitely definite, officially official? What's the source? Also: are we talking all the coupled wheels, all the loco wheels of any kind, or what? Awful news if it's as bad as it sounds.

Yes, do we know that they've been STOLEN or if they were scrapped legitimately? You never know, given the state the tender top is in and the boiler is rumoured to be in, i wouldn't be too shocked if the wheels were knackered too. They seem a rather unusual item for someone to just come along and 'half inch'

Yeesh, looks like the end of that one then. Tragic.

As you say TenWheeler, it is interesting to compare the response to this with the response to the Finnish loco. There are also parallels to be drawn with the crazed response some nutters gave when they saw photos of Dominion of Canada. We are a parochial lot.

Not the polices domain?? Excuse me but the removing and cutting up of something you don't own is theft ,
Dispite what Austerity sayes it must put the whole project in jeopordy , having new wheel sets and axles cast on top of the cost of restoration will in my view be beyond the groups fund raising capability don't forget this is the same people who plan to restore 35011 to air smoothed condition , in my view they have a choice, either sell whats left of the crab to fund 35011 or sell 35011 to pay for the new parts now needed for 42859, if the later action is prefered it would make sence, a crab would be more use to a preserved line than an MN

Im in favour of the indivduals re paying for what they have lost/stolen. Its not just a chunk of metal.

That probably depends on the relationship between the tenant and the landlord (i.e. the loco's owners and the people who own/manage the land). If you dump something on my front garden, I think I'd reasonably be able to dispose of it in a manner of my choosing.

This project seems to be completely stalled, presumably because the people that own the remains of the crab don't have any money to move it, let alone restore it. On that basis, sad as it seems, it's probably not that surprising that an unsympathetic (if rather shortsighted and uninformed) landlord decided to monetise the apparently rusty old junk on his land.

It would appear even then there was only one pair of drivers back in 2004 I am sure I asked about it back then, and the guys who owned the loco at the time had removed the others to the GCR. I might be wrong but if anyone knows anyone from the original group it may be worth asking where the others are.

Whereas I do not agree with the current landowners decision to chop these up, I am suprised that the Pikeys have not had something like this away many years ago. The old married quarters at Binbrook were sold off and renamed Brookenby or as is known locally as Crookenby !! need I say more!

So does anyone know who actually owns the crab now? Is it the 35011 group? I wouldn't mind knowing what they want to do with the remains. Could much be salvaged? Obviously the tender could be.

One can only hope that the frames, cylinders and boilers are just too large for dodgy scrapmen to deal with. If 2/3 wheelsets are already safe elsewhere then the outlook may not be so bleak, but the loco needs to be moved, NOW.

I would be prepared to give money to this. Who do I contact? Are they aware of the situation? Are they already taking steps?

Before people get too wound up at the police do we know if any offence has been committed - its potentially a landlord and tenant issue and thus a wholly civil matter.

I can categorically tell you that this loco is owned by one individual and certainly NOT by ACE locomotives. It would appear that no laws have been broken and nothing has been stolen. The actions that have been taken are the result of a long drawn out and heavy handed dispute. The police and solicitors can do nothing because of the civil legal parameters set by preceding events. The moral issues here are difficult to quantify for the average landlord but easy to see if you are a regular on this forum. Unfortunately there have been disagreements and reported breaking of gentlemen's agreements. It is evident that this a case of the organisation overwhelming the individual.

However it is still hoped that the remainder of the loco will reach safe haven in the near future. It appears that itis intended that this loco will eventually steam again.

The owner of 42859 needs all the support he can get. As you can see from the info on Ten Wheeler's latest post, the owner is up for a fight. The Railway and National Press could lend a hand I am sure.

Lets hope that the owner can/already has moved the remainder of the loco and tender to a place of safety. One tends to think the dismantled loco and tender had been "at risk" in open storage for so many years, and in some respects it is surprising that unauthorised removal of parts has not taken place before now.

It is a shame, because we are not that well blessed with ex-LMS engines in preservation, compared to ex-GWR and SR locos, the "Barry" random effect of course, and also a medium-sized loco such as 42859 might well eventually find ready use on the likes of the ELR, K & WVR, and Severn Valley.

We wish the owner well, but does anyone know if funds are actually available to start work on the engine down in Dorset?

Everyone agrees the owner needs help.
however to end up in this mess if the engine is to be saved will need the owner to first break cover and ask for help.
