E1 for the IOWSR and 46447 to go on loan to ESR

    For all the grumbellers out there, the two Austerities on the Island retain their vac gear. It used to be operable on 198, don't know about the other, but the point is, it wasn't stripped off whilst neither needed as complex a strip down as the E1 will, I dont see it being totally binned

    There is a good chance that work on the Ivatt tank may gain from the need to free up workshop space for when work commences on the E1.

    There is also the need to produce drawings for the new boiler to incorperate any new regulations that may apply, then produce a fully specified tender document. The E1 will probably stay intact and on display until the boiler is at very least at the ordering stage.

    Gary, will the Ivatt tanks retain their vacuum brakes?

    I must admit that I really have no idea. Not too sure how the air brake system for them is to be done, as the loco steam brake on LMS engines is controlled by the vacuum. The original idea for std class 2s to be used was simpler due to the standards having an independant steam brake.

    So did applying the Westinghouse apply the steam brake, or was there a triple valve etc on the loco? I think we have had threads on this site before for dual braking in the MIC section...

    It doesn't seem insurmountable at any rate!

    I was thinking more along the lines of working light engine, with the LMS set up even when light engine the vacuum has to be used to control the steam brake. I suppose its a matter of using a different method of controlling the steam brake.

    I imagine that on the standard 2s the air would have been used to control the steam brake.

    Surely the best way for the Ivatts & the E1 would be to remove the steam brake and fully convert them to air brake. Then, as with terriers, have a proportional device which applies the air if the vacuum system is in use.

    There used to be such a system on W8 Freshwater, but during restoration it was sold to the West Somerset for use on 32678 (Knowle).

    The E1 is currently right hand drive so it will either need to be converted back or new overalls ordered!

    The last post is quite interesting - when was it changed from left to right hand side drive? Presumably the reversor and everything else was moved, maybe when the boiler was changed...?

    A few old pictures of the E1 can be found easily on the web and these show no air or vacuum brake equipment, presumably the steam brake was used with loose coupled wagons. Looks like there is a lot to do!

    With agreements having been reached by the parties involved, the movements of the locos is about to take place. The E1 will be loaded onto the road transport tomorrow (27 October) although, due to ferry constraints, it will not leave Cranmore until Tuesday. I will update this post when I receive further information.

    Excellent news, over the last few weeks at Havenstreet much has been done to prepare 46447 for departure. Its own boiler was in 41313 so that has been swapped over. Various parts have been collected from storage all over the site. Earlier this week 4 different boiler moves took place, this included placing the new boiler for W11 into the frames. Very much looking forward to seeing the E1 at Havenstreet

    The E1 class was such a part of IoW loco history that this has to be a major achievement. Even more so when she is up and running!

    The E1 is now loaded onto the road transport and is due to go to the Isle of Wight on Tuesday. Both the loco and tender of 46447 should transfer to Cranmore on Wednesday 31 Oct.

    Thank for keeping us all up to date with progress on this loco exchange.

    I've done some asking around and understand that the chimney was from IOW O2 loco W31 Chale.

    Just out of interest - what happened to the chimney made for the loco when it was at Cannock & Rugeley Colliery?

    And 46447 arrived at Cranmore but to late for any photos. Engine and tender to be unloaded tomorrow (1/11/12).

    Good to see her on the Island. Interesting that the article suggests an identity - which I guess stops that speculation. Is it too early for the livery debate? :peep:

    My vote for W2 Yarmouth would be Olive green. The only liveries that would be considered would be the ones carried by E1s during Island service. So the choice would be Olive Green, Malachite, Black with sunshine lettering and BR Black with the early crest.

    Something that I would love to see is all the Island locos W2,W8,W11 and W24 in the the same period livery. Even better if the 2 island terriers on the mainland could visit and be in the same livery. You never know one day it could happen.
