West Somerset Railway Spring Steam Gala 2013

Discussion in 'Galas and Events' started by West Somerset Wizard, Oct 12, 2012.

The West Somerset Railway’s Spring Steam Gala is traditionally one of the major events in the calendar for both dedicated railway enthusiasts and people who like steam trains alike and next years event will once again take place in March as a six day event on March 16th and 17th and between March 21st and 24th.

However in 2013 there is an extra development with a steam train service also scheduled to run on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday March 18th to 20th. This will essentially be the WSR’s four steam trains a day each way service over the 20 miles of line between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead but they may be augmented with some “extras” on Monday and Tuesday. As these are finalised they will appear on the company website West Somerset Railway.

The West Somerset is responding to comments that visitors spending time in the area or booking for the 6 days of the March Gala have been left with a three day “gap” in the action. Fares for a new 8 Day Rover Ticket have still to be finalised and again details of these will appear at West Somerset Railway.

I may have heard something about a railmotor somewhere, but as usual don't shoot!

  3. I'd imagine enquiries have already been made about the availability of every possible, suitable, working engine, along with hiring charges, transport costs and other nasty expenses. How it all shakes down will only be revealed, probably in drip fashion, over the next few months. Hope updates will be added to this thread as and when.

Who said that the special events team ignore all suggestions? Well done to the WSR. <BJ>

Nothing helps pay for an overhaul like transporting a dead loco across the country and back!

Think that's a slightly optimistic wish list, 3672 is unlikely to draw many as a static exhibit (Austerities don't draw the general public like Spam Cans named after WWII PM's), apart from Mainline tours, Tyseley owned loco's (IE 5043), don't seem to operate on Heritage Railways, and I'd hate to see the low loader bill for transporting 46512 from Aviemore.

6023 and 7822 seem more realistic, if you want an Ivatt I'd suggest 46521 is probably a better shout (unless this is the one you meant and the above was a typo).

    YRM,

Have you won the lottery? :p
Whilst the above list is a fantastic lineup of engines in its own right, you'd be taking locomotives from all across the country to formulate it so it's highly speculative and it'd be extremely costly. Sorry to put a dampener on things but costs dictate the likelihood of these things happening...

Is the plan to run the visiting locomotives during the midweek before the gala restarts on the Thursday?

    Hey YRM,
Whilst I appreciate your enthusiasm for the Gala and your desire to know which locos might appear, you must understand it's a long and complicated process organising visitors for such an event. This forum is full of details of locos announced for this or that event and as often as not for numerous very good reasons they don't appear. So I suspect visiting locos for the WSR Sping Gala (and probably most other 2013 Galas) will not be made public until early next year at best, but you can rest assured that lots of work is going on behind the scenes to ensure a good and varied lineup (I hope!)

    Cheers, John

I think YRM is just winding everybody up and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he were not as young as his user name suggests. Nobody could be a silly as he seems to be.

    Regards

The USA thing is... an interesting choice, but will both 5542 and 93 be doing the Norton shuttles, or will one be doing full-line?
