    Hi all, I have been thinking about this for a while, is it possible with all the current rolling stock on both the FR/WHR and WHHR to recreate the old NWNGR Rainbow train set? If it is not currently possible, then how about repainting some of the existing stock to that condition at some point in the future?

    Photographic oppotunities I assume.

    However, no working loco on either railways will be suitable (except maybe Prince), until Russel has returned, to be able to recreate something that looks historically accurate.

    Could do with a replica Pickering brake, then you'd need to repaint a carriage or two - as well as re-convert them to semi-glazed condition to be totally accurate...

    ...and steam Russell in cut-down condition, of course.

    It was definitely a WHR period 'modification', not the NWNGR...

    And only run to Dinas, after stopping at Beddgelert for no obvious reason for a couple of hours.

    And take all the cushions out as well. And arrive fashionably late. No refreshments, toilets or wheelchair access, obviously.

    And then of course there is the question of who is going to pay for repainting just so that a few photographers can take a few pictures..I doubt whether they will fork out for that.
    Doesn't sound like a very good business proposition to me.

    I can't understand why they do this either but people have been prepared to pay out a lot of money for this sort of thing. If the end result is a new coat of paint in its present day livery for the stock involved duly paid for by the charter fee, then it does not seem a bad idea. Any publicity received as a result of the publication of the pictures concerned would be an added bonus.

    You wouldn't neccessarily have to cut down Russell. The WHHR's '590' will be quite appropriate once her restoration is complete (though admittedly that is probably a long way off). A blue Welsh Pony would also be very approriate if she is ever restored...

    IIRC, a replica Pickering brake was listed as a long-term aspiration for the WHHR's heritage train project, but all seems to have gone quiet on this front - the website (http://www.ashburycarriages.co.uk/) has disappeared. Can anyone from Gelert's Farm give us an update?

    Yes, such a train would not be viable for day-to-day operations over the whole route, but if photographers could be persauded to pay for it for use on charters, I'm sure it would also be a big draw for gala events or WHHR operations. I hope that it will happen at some point.

    The other historical recreation I would really like to see is Russell in original condition with a rake of NWNGR stock. We're close to being able to realise this one - Russell is under overhaul and three suitable coaches are operational, FfR's no. 24 and WHHR's nos. 8 (FfR no. 29 - the "Gladstone car") and 9 (FfR no. 25). The only thing missing is a suitable brake coach. The big potential problem I can forsee is the different braking systems used on the two lines. However, both Russell and the Gladstone coach have run with FfR stock in the past so hopefully this is not an insurmountable difficulty?
