Apologies for the lack of recent updates. That's almost entirely my fault, and I blame the new job for that!

Five pics showing the latest work are now up at :http://jedwards.fotopic.net/p64182794.html.

The new cab is now compete less roof, with the beading around the cab opening plus the original handrail stanchions - even got a working lamp bracket on the back.

Inside the cab is seen the myriad of pipe work, much of which is behind the vertical boiler so best fitted in advance of the arrival of the overhauled boiler from Rolvenden. Also seen is the vacuum system, with Graduable Vacuum/Steam brake valve. The Weir vertical water pump is mounted in the corner of the cab - the boiler feed is a pump and one injector

Thanks again for the updates. Didn't realise Rolvenden was doing the boiler work - good to see some KESR involvement.

Re: Kent and East Sussex 'Gervase'.

Another update, with things progressing well. Since the last set of Gervase progress pictures a new water tank has been made and fitted as shown in the photos dated 31st May 2010. The small vacuum ejector is seen mounted on the right hand side of the loco and big ejector on the other side. Copper piping of the graduable steam brake combination valve, mounted above the drivers vacuum brake valve, is also now complete. Three other pictures show the boiler being steam tested some weeks ago following overhaul at Rolvenden and more recently the cladding being fitted in preparation for dispatch to Elsecar ready for fitting to Gervase

In another positive step, Gervase's power unit crankcase, gearbox and drive shaft were dispatched this week for work to be undertaken to fit them into the new engine mounting frame.

The latest pics of progress are up at http://jedwards.fotopic.net/p65269028.html, and the following nine pictures, too.

Thanks again! Is the engine unit all new or did various bits eventually emerge from the muddier parts of Rolvenden yard?

Nothing at all was left at Rolvenden. All the bits of the engine unit have been sourced from other places.

No mifftery but it would be a mifftake to think that Miff was Moff. But I won't get miffed about it.

With regards to "DOM". (The former locomotive section of the Jersey Eastern Railway Sentinel-Cammel railcar "Brittany" that I understand has now been scrapped).

The railcar is still extant and is owned by Mike Hart. I gather it is currently being rebuilt in Romania.

A rather overdue report on progress with Gervase.
An early start today to unload the lorry that transported the boiler back from its overhaul at Rolvenden. A couple of days earlier on its way south the same lorry delivered the steam engine power unit thats also going to be overhauled under contract at KESR. Its in rather poor state but a lucky find recently was a large collection of new engine parts that the owner was able to purchase from the Rutland Railway.
The last few months have been on with more of the detailed works. The new cab roof is now fitted and by the end of tomorrow the new coal bunker should be finished. More pipework has been installed, including the large pipes that take the steam from the boiler down to the engine at the front of the loco and back to the cab to be exhausted up the chimney.
All things being well a few more working weekends and the team will be ready to install the boiler and get that finally plumbed up.

There are three new pictures up at: http://jedwards.fotopic.net/p67234896.html

Re: Kent and East Sussex 'Gervase'.

The restoration has taken another step forward with the boiler being returned to the cab. That, together with the "engine" being worked on at Rolvenden, means that the project continues to move on at speed!

Pictures of the boiler going in are now up at: http://jedwards.fotopic.net/p67711833.html

Another momentous day. Today, for the first time in about 45 years, Gervase had a fire lit in her. All went well, and the restoration continues. Pictures of today's event are up at http://jedwards.fotopic.net/p68599442.html

Sorry about this, but 'Gervase' is new to me. Please could a member of the restoration team point me in the direction of a website where I could get some info on the engine's history, specs, etc

    Regards

I'm not a member of the restoration team but, in addition to Fireline's gallery linked above, the loco has pages on the Elsecar Railway site here and here

More details about this fascinating little loco (built as a Manning Wardle but converted to a Sentinel design) can also be found by reading the many pages of this thread.

Reading this thread is pretty comprehensive history. Luky loco really, it came very close to going over the edge.....

Indeed. The OP was enquiring what had become of the loco and an early reply (page 1) said:
Congratulations to the restoration team and all others involved in rescuing Gervase from the brink and rebuilding it so quickly.

Re: Kent and East Sussex 'Gervase'.

With apologies for the lack of posting lately, due mainly to my being distracted.

Gervase is coming on in leaps and bounds. The body plating is well advanced, and she really looks like she was meant to again!

Another update. A phrase often used about rebuilds is "... is beginning to look like a locomotive again", but Gervase never did! However, one of these images, of Gervase without her upper bodywork, makes me think either of a heavyweight version of Brathwaite & Ericsson's Novelty. Or a standard gauge De Winton.

    Morning All,

A new picture of 'Gervase' has just been posted on the WWW. It appears to have been taken before my original picture that started this thread as it is nicely painted and still has its nameplate :

    http://railwayphotographs.shutterfly.com/pictures/840

My original picture was on Fotopic so disappeared from the WWW when Fotopic did. One day perhaps I'll get it on Flickr!
