I can remember a journey from Bristol TM to Yeovil PM behind 60009 on 13 August 2005 en route to Exeter SD but I guess our old friend "gauging issues" may have intervened since then.

60019 in her guise as Dominion of New Zealand ran from Poole to Bristol on at least one occasion last year via Westbury so assume the problems with any gauging issues may be between Yeovil and Westbury BUT as the clearances change over a period of time this could have changed since then. I thought 60019 had run between Taunton and Westbury in not too distant past but cannot find date at moment. DH

60019 ran London to Reading and then to Bishops Lydeard and return via Newbury, Westbury and Castle Cary on 21st June. DH

Rather belated - but having seen/listened to it on Monday, I had to have another listen. A really superb piece of recording, but I bet the driver had his heart in his mouth. One slip and that would have been that! Shows that a Bulleid can make a good noise when working hard! Am planning to see Tangmere on Brewham Bank tomorrow on the WSE if the weather is OK. If she sounds half as good as she did last Sunday, I'll be delighted.

Whereabouts between Reading and Taunton is Brewham Bank incidentally ?, and is it the only significant climb apart from Savernake on that section ?

    Many thanks

Starts at Castle Cary and climbs up past the old Somerset and Dorset line through Bruton. Summit is beyond Bruton but dont have my guide books to hand to be able to give exact point. Some nice photo locations around the climb but not having been there recently not sure what the vegitation growth is like. DH

Thanks, that's very helpful. So 34067 SHOULD be going quite well through Bruton then I guess ?

If anything like she came up Parkstone Bank on Thursday evening she will be going well!!
Many moons ago before the end of through trains over the S and D in 1962 my family sometimes went for the day to where the S and D crossed over the GWR main line just to the north of Cole Station. I have two favourite memories from Summer Saturdays in 1960 or 61 of trains on the GWR main line - first was a King coming up the bank from Castle Cary on a return working a few hours after having gone down - so possibly a Minehead train? - with a 13 or 14 coach load on and storming past us up the bank. The other one I can still hear in my memory now was of a double-chimneyed County on a Weymouth to Birmingham/Wolverhampton train that stopped at Castle Cary. We heard her all the way from Castle Cary up past us and on towards Bruton. Magic!

There used to be a lovely view from opposite Gants Mill just outside Bruton for trains coming up the hill but as I mentioned earlier long time since I was last there so no idea on whether the view is still there. DH

That memory can still be repeated albeit not with a County class. Last summer Nunney Castle blasted up to the summit after rejoining the main line at Castle Cary. It was returning to Bristol with the Weymouth Seaside Express. <BJ>

Much as I like Nunney the noisy! there was something really special about the County that has stuck in my memory ever since BJ - have managed a couple of runs with preserved steam up that section of line and the run with the Mighty Moguls many moons ago now was good! Hope Tangers lived up to expectations on the West Somerset Express tonight and I can imagine Ollie raising the echos on Sunday evening DH

Remarkable isn't it ? And now we can say that in less than 5 months time we'll be into a new year !

Great vid btw. I gather from RTC that ALL remaining WSEs are now fully booked. Excellent news !

If that's the case, bang goes my idea of booking one. Better make the most of my RD trip in that case.
