I see from the NRM facebook page that Mallard will be displayed in black undercoat in the North Yard tomorrow weather permitting.

The valances were on in the pic i saw. I assume this black is very temporary and its being put outside for pics just for the day. I guess its being done just because they could.

True but it's a credit to the NRM that she looked so good at Railfest if it's the 1980s paint job still.

Oh definitely. It looked in great condition when I saw it at Railfest. A credit to those who painted it and those who have cared for it to make the paint last 25ish years.

Mallard had the valances on this morning in black as the rest of the loco is.
in fact that and scotsman together in black look like a pair of those models carved from coal.
In fact they are not the most interesting engines in there, the most interesting one is on a well wagon next to the western region 1000 class hydraulic,
    In my opinion you understand.

Maybe the loan of the 2ft 6in gauge Sierra Leone 2-6-2T from Welshpool has been the inspiration for the matt black treatment to 4472 and 4486.... LOL

    New stealth train perhaps?

Looks like a bit of fun and a photo op for a day or so. She'll be in blue again soon enough.

A video of Mallard and Steve Davies explains... An impressive, if unusual, sight!

Apologies for the thread drift, but at Railfest I was surprised to see water dripping out of the pipes between Mallard's loco and tender on the first day - before it rained. Surely the tender tank didn't still have water in it from the last time it was steamed?

We filled the tender to give it weight for the transit move across from the Great Hall. Did the same when we moved it to and from Shildon. You saw it draining.
