Wonderful to see a Castle right on top of the work with the safety valve feathering. So Great Western .........

Interesting to see how far the exhaust seems to be above the cab even with the double chimney Castle. No wonder they never had to consider smoke deflectors. Not something I've thought about before but with the long video it was quite evident. Shame it wasn' a bit more humid so you could see what the feather from the safety valve was doing when it got towards the cab.

    Definitely! lol

All jokes aside, you can clearly see from the video that the loco is not being thrashed. The reversing rod is almost in the middle, so the cut-off is notched right back.

Maybe we need some expert analysis from Mr. 4472? lol

I'm no GWR man but you'd have to be very churlish not to appreciate the beauty of any steam engine being worked as intended. Poetry in (valve) motion indeed.

I must admit that i am no fan of the GWR,
I was never a great fan of Tysley either,
    But,
You have got to admit they turn out some lovely looking engines that go as well as they look from there these days.
well done you guys, well done. (it is just a shame it aint RED)

Pleasant enough but a bit pedestrian, check out 60009 on the same stretch.

That's the beauty of a Castle - effortless at speed.

I assure you that it wasn't "pedestrian!". I can't say how fast it was without getting Ben a speeding ticket, but we have the GPS - TRUST ME!

1080HP? Come on, give the GWR some credit, even a Castle can put out more horsepower than that! :)

For a moment, just put aside the colour and which company built it, and who owns and runs it now, the truth is it is simply magnificent - in 2012 - to see an example of British locomotive Engineering excellence doing what it was designed to do. Absolutely stunning. It is a privilege to be living at a time when this can still be experienced first-hand. Many, many thanks to all those who make it happen!

Well said that man .. being able to remember castles at speed on BR mainline - this was fantastic , wish I lived closer to be able to experience it -- be glad for what you have , here in Canada it s a desert for steam on the mainline......
