Yes, I was absolutely gutted that I wasn't the only person at both those events. It's haunted me ever since. :)

I slept the night before Rocket 150 in empty stock stabled in Lime Street. I was only disturbed by a cleaner, who apologised. I doubt that would be possible now.

My great great grandfather was furious when it turned out that the Illustrated London News ran a series of etchings from the opening of the Stockton and Darlington that were almost identical to his own...

... and when these etchings were published in the aforementioned periodical, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth by some who suggested that the so-called "steam locomotive" may have in fact been assisted in its travails by a thoroughbred and its rider.

Horse on the front vs box on the back..
Seems like this debate has been rolling thru centuries.
somewhere there will be a cave painting of a mammoth with a load on its back, with some long haired cave dweller aiming his spear in anger at the sheep at the back.

In today's Steam Railway it the NRM hasn't calculated the potential cost of the move independent estimates suggest the cost bringing the A4s over are in the region of £400,000 to £800,000 .

In the same issue the Bowes railway is under threat because of withdrawal of funding of £18,500.

That sounds incredibly expensive and to be honest, unbelievable. I also think it is extremely unlikely that the NRM has announced the locos are moving without having an idea on costs. It sounds like more sensationalist, stirring, guesswork journalism from the Steam Beano.

You cynic! To be honest the fact that SR would publish this with 'independent experts' giving opinions which are so far apart discredits any merit in the story.

£800,000 to ship two locos over sounds like complete rubbish to me... if it cost that much to get lcos shipped from North America we wouldn't be overrun with their produce.

As has been said, it's unlikely that they'd announce it if they hadn't got a pretty good idea what it would cost. I suspect they'll be here for two years in order to pay off the not inconsiderable costs of shipping them over but it's unlikely it'd touch nigh on a million of your finest pounds.

There is always costs that you don't think about like removal of all asbestos and the cost of the cosmetic restoration ,and the cost of moving to a suitable port.

I'm quite certain that those costs will have been considered by the NRM and wouldn't be anywhere near £400k, nevermind £800k!

Why would you need to remove all the asbestos if it's safely encapsulated by the cladding?

The original poster of this snippet said 'independent estimates'. There was no reference to 'expert', that term appearing in a later post.. My independent estimate is between £14/17/6d and £936,432/5/2d. Probably as valid (or as worthless) as the SR one!
