    On some locos with long narrow fireboxes (e.g. large GW types) yes, but with a wide firebox (like on an A4) I don't beleive it is a problem.

    Does it also depend on whether the cab is open at the back or not? Don't A4's have a rubber sheet between the cab and tender?

    I think the ruling under the wires is that nothing may go beyond the envelope of the loco so that cuts out long fire irons because of the high level risk. Neither can the support crew go on top to shovel coal forward - not that they would choose to with 25kv over their heads.

    Agreed. I thought it might make a difference if your 'window' was 'open or closed' though? Of course there's always the chance that you could raise one out of the real windows.
