Why do people talk about "midlandizing" instead of "midlandising"? It's because most of the users of computers allow them to default to US English instead of British English!

This is a myth. ..ize is actually the original British way of spelling most of these words. ...ise is in fact a French corruption. The Oxford dictionary recognizes both but with a preference for the ...ize ending.

Also meter and metre (for length), meter is actually the correct spelling in English but the French metre is used as part of the standardized unit system.

I alway thought that meter is a thing for measuring gas or liquids and as you say, metre the French originated measurement of length in the metric system.

A nice compilation but I feel that it should have included a clip over Shap or Beattock.

Just been having a look at a 10th Edition (1941) Machinery Handbook that I have. It is, indeed, meters, millimeters and centimeters back in those days.

I just looked at the picture of the Duchess with the all of it's paint applied.
Would anyone like to see the 6233 without the smoke deflectors?
I don't know if my "The Great Book of Trains" is a good reference, however at the bottom of the page it does show one w/o them.

Some truth here, but the ...ize is a very old fashioned ie 18th - early 19th way of doing it. I did read somewhere it's derived from Greek, but I should know (!). The French ...ise is derived from Latin, or so I understand, and was adopted when all things French become very popular during the 19thC. The Americans still use many 18thC bits of language like 'gotten' while being very, quite wildly, inventive with the language in so many other ways: strange people.

Personally I prefer ...ise, as it sounds softer.

    Regards

Agreed. As for metre deriving from French, aren't metres an SI unit, and therefore French to start with?

The Citadel Express to Carlisle is on the same day as 5043 running Tyseley to Edinburgh.
