Interesting story in the latest issue of Heritage Railway which says that Jeremy Hosking is attempting to buy BR Standard Tank 80079 from the owners and he intends getting her back on the Main Line. When restored she will be based on the SVR between ML charter work. Be great if it happens. 80079 was a cracking performer on the ML and the Valley.

Be nice to see a 80000 on the mainline again. But is this story based on facts or a rumour overheard that HR have decided to make 'Headline News' ? Been a few instances of this from both HR and SR recently.

Be good if it happens, i know Tanks are limited on water capacity, but with standard tanks, you'd have the ability to do 60 in either direction which could prove usefull in certain circumstances.

Was 80098 ever certified for 75MPH towards the end of it's mainline stint ?.

umm? after another standard? im surprised he hasnt tried for one of the larger type 4 4-6-0 tender engines , or a standard 5 far more suited to mainline use 73096 and 75069 before it showed just how capable these engines are on the mainline

I have to say I would not like to see this happen. 80079 is a useful part of the SVR fleet, albeit out of service at present, and when she comes back I would like to see her spend her time on the valley with the odd gala visit, not thrashed about the mainline with occasional operating days on the valley in between, because I have to say I'm sceptical that being on the SVR in between charter work will automatically entail regular use.

I don't know how far down the overhaul queue 80079 is, but to put it blunty, in its current out-of-ticket condition the loco is naff all use to the railway's current operations anyway. At least if it is overhauled for mainline use it will still spend a decent amount of time in the nearer future operating on the Valley. Even infrequent use is better than not having it running at all. Be grateful that there appears (assuming the story's true) to be the desire to keep the loco on the SVR. That will make a welcome contrast to all the locos that have left the line over the years!

Perhaps he fancied something different ? as far as im aware all his loco's to date are tender types of class 5 or above, lets face is Hosking buys steam loco's the way we buy Hornby, and who doesn't have a tank of some description in their collection ?.

If it is allowed to be used on the SVR a decent amount, it's good. If it isn't, I'm with guard-jamie on this. Unkind people may say that the SVR has dug a hold for itself with the current loco situation, but everything has it's time.

What sort of range would it have compared to something like the "pocket rocket". Would it be able to do the Cambrian runs as I think it would be an ideal machine for something like that if it had the required capacity. Certainly better than the black five.

Yes before everybody comments I do appreciate that the Cambrian is or was a West Coast operation

True it's a tank but in the case of the GWR heavy freight tanks,as a 7F or 8F, they are a long way from your more numerous class 3 or 4!!.

As for the Cambrian, it's getting steam to work with ERTMS that's more problematic than loco choice, and i'd imagine theres even less space to play with on a tank than tender loco.

As far as i am aware the overhaul is to be to mainline standards rather than definately heading for the main line and if sold a condition of sale is that it remains an SVR loco.

The reasoning behind it being that the funds from the sale go towards the overhaul (and the speeding up of the overhaul) of 75069. As the sale agreement includes the clause that the engine must remain an SVR loco this could be a good thing and before to long the railway could have two useful engines in service.

You could always put a plastic bowser in a GUV with a fire hose connection and extend it's water range... maybe give it up to 80-100 miles range perhaps ?, that'd be enough for tank engine ?
There's definitely a gap in the market on the mainline for a tank engine.

80079 - Standard Class 4, Ex BR... This locomotive is in the Engine House. Heritage Railway (above) reports Jeremy Hosking has bid to buy this engine. A committee member of the owner, The Passenger Tank Fund, has posted that there is a meeting open to all members of the Fund the weekend of 29 October to discuss the matter. The unanimous recommendation of the committee is that it sells 80079, and the funds from the sale be used towards the overhaul of 75069 (currently stored at Bridgnorth, its overhaul deferred). Part of the proposed agreement to sell is that the loco remains on the SVR, which is the prospective purchaser's intention. If it proceeds, the outcome in a few years should be two class 4s back in action on the SVR. The alternative is that neither is in action for many years (SVRA online).

I'd rather it's back in ten years with ten years of SVR service ahead of it than in two years to get thrashed to pieces on the mainline and the non-availability for SVR services that would inevitably bring.

I doubt it would be 'thrashed to pieces' on the mainline, I don't think there is a big demand for Class 4 tank engine power on the mainline. I'd think it would be used occasionally around Birmingham or perhaps in the South West where lines are suited to tank engine operation. A Standard 4 would be very capable, in certain roles, at mainline work as well as working on the SVR.

    Cambrians ?

80080 got just about everywhere when it did it's mainline stint., I rode behind it in Andover, saw it on the S&C and several places in between.

Perhaps I'm being a bit negative. After all, I would like to see 80079 in steam, the sooner the better.

It's just call me a cynic, but I wouldn't like to see 80079 leave the railway, as others have in the past when they've gone mainline. Provisos can only go so far. Would there be an issue with the SVR and the owner/mainline operators wanting it at the same time? Mainline high season is the same as a heritage railway's high season.

What looks slightly cynical to me is that Mr Hosking is, perhaps, taking advantage of the SVR's locomotive situation (it hasn't got enough that work) to expand his own fleet - if he were being truly benevolent he could just sponsor the overhaul of the locomotive without any purchase agreement.

It would be a shame to see a useful locomotive leave the ownership of a group that are sympathetic towards the SVR but the possibility of having 80079 and 75069 back in steam is a situation that works advantageously for the SVR but a scenario that the railway has got into all by itself.
