24 photos of a visit to this small but friendly line can be seen here:

Define an 'unfriendly' line. I've never visited one outside the national network.

Not rail connected maybe but our short repeat visits have all been very good over the years. People have time to talk and seem genuinely interested in pleasing the customers. A real friendly place to visit.

Visited one NG line this summer where the first train of the day (as advertised on the web site) didn't run, so first train was an hour later instead; at the time advertised on the web site the station was locked up and no timetable (or any other) information visible. On eventually hailing the loco crew over the fence we were informed that the cancellation of this train had been advised via a poster at the opposite end of the line. When the train did run, tickets didn't go on sale until 5 minutes before departure... overall impression was of a degree of unfriendliness and disorganisation.

The vast majority of lines are a far cry from that experience; but, some do particularly excel at welcoming people.

That's not being unfriendly, it's just being badly organised.

LOL. All roads seem to lead to the WHR on here, going by the number of threads concerning that railway ! The difference between a friendly railway and a unfriendly one can be calculated by the smile you get as you hand over your money !!

This thread was not going that way until you brought it up.

No ? LOL. Getting back on subject, yes the Corris railway has always been friendly no doubt due to the way in which the railways reconstruction was so hard won.

Yes. As everyone knows, rebuilding the Ffestiniog and the Welsh Highland was simplicity itself and involved absolutely no effort.

Excellent photos! If you call in again check with the crew who would at the very least show you the cab. Thanks for the publicity, and we do pride ourselves on being friendly. It's only by getting passengers through the gate that we can enjoy our work on the loco!

Exactly, not only that , the Corris railway has always been friendly over the years that i've known it, it's the impression you get each time you go. Keep up the good work.

Certainly some railways have a very good reputation for being friendly while some, the FR is one, have had reputations in the past for not treating their passengers particularly well. I've never had this impression of the FR, I've always found my visits (I was there on Monday for a trip to Blaenau and back) fine but I've noticed it among friends and others.

Does the Festiniog allow pre-arranged group visits to Boston Lodge? We did not visit it on my recent trip, but I don't know if the FR had said no or we simply didn't have time. We didn't visit the Snowdon Mtn Rly depot at Llanberis (but I gather they always say no) or the Vale of Rheidol at Aberystwyth, but did visit behind the scenes everywhere else.

It may be of interest to know that I was on Railtrail's Welsh Megasteam trip. Very good it was too - and good value at £895 for a week, staying in university accommodation. As far as I know Railtrail plan to run it next summer - watch their site:

    Talyllyn photos will be next,
