What is is about worn out pieces of choo-choo and gricers? It is almost as bad as heroin addiction!

All too many tourist railways are cluttered up with bits and pieces that will never be of any practical use, obscure the views from the train and represent tied up resources.

Come on folks, kick the habit, call in the scrappies and use the liberated monies for development work or even reducing the overdraft.

Ok.. So who's going to be the first to cut up a Barry wreck ?.. Seriously.. Look at all the cuffufle about the possible scrapping of a Deltic a few years back...
Emotion will always rule the wallet.. Unfortunately the wallet isn't always that big enough

Interesting ideas, perhaps the nearest project that could be feasable as a non running 'exhibit' is a ex-Barry Merchant Navy (say 35010 for example) remove all the outside motion components etc, fabricating in steel a original style smokebox and manufacture 'air smoothed' sides, and as Southern Locomotives has shown a new Bulleid tenders is possible.

I'm certain that such a 'exhibit' would be welcome at the Bluebell, Mid Hants etc.

I think a lot of the preserved railways are missing an important point, which is showing the visitor how the locos actually work. It's one thing to have several examples sitting around either waiting for restoration, in storage or being used, but why not show the visitors how they are built and work? Using the old parts, this story could be told, either with a whole engine "re-built" from scrap parts, or via parts of a loco.

Strange idea that, letting visitors see how an engine is repaired. Could be a real money spinner for group tours around repair sheds etc. Wonder if anyone would be interested to watch 'Hengist' being built?

I would, though I'm now living in the south I would visit next time I'm "up north" ...
Well done on an excellent website (http://72010-hengist.org/index.html) - plenty of information and easy to navigate and read!

You only have to see how popular the NRM's workshop gallery is to realise people are fascinated by engineering. With a 'Deltic', Tornado and Scotsman all under repair there last winter there was a constant stream of folk watching the progress.

Don't quarrel with this at all but "progress" is the key word. It is not the same as the original proposal in this thread which, frankly, seems little more than a justification for hoarding junk.
